Cornwall and the West of England - I have the best and most exciting memories of this place.

Penzance was the place where I stayed when visiting Cornwall. Itīs ideal because you are on the one hand quite central for discovering the region around as on the other hand youīre directly at the seaside, and the beach in Penzance is great, clean and family-friendly at one go. I even had a room with view on the bay, so this was just gorgeous...

In and around Penzance you can discover lots of lovely aspects of the English countryside.
Itīs on Cornwalls penninsula that is most west, and so itīs just a short distance to Landīs End with its seaside attractions and the fantastic rocks you can climb down until you really are at the edge of England!

Itīs a brilliant starting-point for hikers as well as a family-friendly holiday location. You can use the coastal paths all around and have fantastic views on the coastline and the sea.

Getting around is easy: walk, take a bike, rent a car or use the marvellous public transport system. If you bring along a bit of time (because the busses donīt run every 5 minutes) get a regional transportation ticket and go everywhere you want by bus. There are no motorways, no dense traffic, no dirt, no spoilt landscape. Just nature, nice houses, small villages and very friendly people. And: itīs the end station of the railway. Youīll at least 4 hours from London or more if you get there by train...

You also can go to places that are filled with the mystery of Celtic tradition: Glastonbury (already in Somerset) was the place where King Arthur was said to be buried, Tintagel on the North Coast of Cornwall was the place where he apparently had his castle. Below the castle is a cave filled with water in high tide, but empty at low tide. you can even marry there in celtic costumes! In Tintagle you can also see the oldest postoffice in Britain. And itīs not far to Dorset (Hardyīs county).

A MUST is St. Micheals Mount , the equivalent to Mont St.Michel on the French side. Go there by boat and walk (!!) back in low tide - or vice versa. An unforgettable experience.

My tip: use the local tourist guides. Take a bus-trip to all the places you want to see, no stress, no parking problems, and they take you easily to any nice place you want to see for reasonable money. I did several tours from Penzance, and all were well guided and without stress.

If you want to stay at a noble place go to the Tabert Hotel and Restaurant, a Georgian House from the 18th century. Youīll leave a lot of money there, but itīs a good location for seeing the Isles of Scilly as well (ferry, Heliport nearby).

My tip: go to the harbour for sunrise. Take a good cup of coffee/tea with you, some buns and sit down at the harbour to watch the sun come up. Youīll never forget Penzance.

And: donīt forget the Cornish Cream Tea in the afternoon.......
who thinks about calories? Me not being there....
;-)
