Advantages: Bustling, lively, Excellent for rainy days Disadvantages: Small beach area if you want that sort of holiday
...There is a buzz in Penzance which you will only match in Truro once in Cornwall, so if you're fed up with the smaller quainter areas this is the place to go.
There are many old fashioned pubs (the ones that don't have disco music blasting out). We actually sat and had a pub meal in one that had a resident seagull. Apparently he goes in every day for his dinner and we certainly witnessed him arriving on cue. One pub even has it's own ... ...Park in the middle of Penzance if you're into gardening. There are some magnificent, huge plants there which are only able to thrive because of Cornwall's mild climate.
As a starting point for a good holiday Penzance is ideal, but don't go there if you're looking for a beach holiday as the beach is small and uninspiring, there is however a huge sea water swimming pool if you're lucky and get hot weather.
I often wonder if the people who live in Cornwall realise just how lucky they are. Wonderful scenery, magnificent beaches, a glorious blue sea and last but not least they have Penzance.
Your first glance is likely not to be too impressive as you will more than likely enter through the main roadway which is busy and unspectacular, but then, if you're lucky and it's a sunny day,you will see St Michael's mount with it's eerie building rising out of a turquoise sea. If that isn't enough for you and scenery isn't your thing then the shopping centre is a must. There are quaint backroads for those who like fishing villages, and a large shopping area where you can buy anything from cornish pasties to antiques, surfing gear, or fishing equipment. There are the usual large stores (no Marks and Sparks though unfortunately) and small craft shops selling pottery and carvings etc., There is also an amusement arcade for the kids if it's wet.
For shipping enthusiasts there is a large quayside with ships from foreign shores anchored and it is even possible to take a ferry over to the Scilly Isles - although I personally found this journey rather long and boring.

Five minutes away is Newlyn (which stinks of fish) and a little further along is Mousehole which is smaller and prettier.

Advantages: Beautiful, friendly, nuff said Disadvantages: none - i hope
...towns perhaps only Exmouth beats Penzance for natural beauty. But the latter is more welcoming on a human level, the tied cottages, the warm welcome from the indiginous people is very well received. Even the name, "Penzance" has a kind of hypnotic romantic air about it. The only real place I can remember is Mousehole which I used to visit frequently when just a kid. I hope it still there. Another great memory is the pasties and the genuine Cornish ...

Advantages: Ideal centre for touring, inexpensive town to stay in. Disadvantages: Penzance itself not typical of the beautiful Cornish towns.
Penzance is a wonderful centre for touring West Cornwall. Its small, compact, but has plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs. As a town, its far from the best in Cornwall, but its one of the cheapest to stay in, and therefore makes it a great base for your touring.
Just outside Penzance, lies St Michaels Mount...a fabulous place, reachable at low tide on foot via the causeway. Around the corner, you find Newlyn, a great artists community and fishing ... ...A short drive from Penzance you will find St Ives. Unspoilt by the passage of time, apart from the new Tate Gallery maybe! The Barbara Hepworth museum is another "must" here!
Tin mines, Gold prospecting, the most beautiful beaches in the Country also await you. Try Hayle/Gwithian/Godrevy beach....over 3 miles of golden sands with the lighthouse at the North end. No crowded beaches here!!
In short, Penzance provides the ideal centre for exploring ...

...has the highest water rates anywhere and the slowest net connection in the country (and all the international cables run through it!). Don't come to Penzance unless you want a really boring life. The best thing out of Penzance? Me and the main A30. Avoid this place like the plague. ...

Advantages: LOTS TO SEE Disadvantages: NOTHING TO DO
...alive. The fact is that Penzance is dead or dieing. It has the highest rate for heroin addiction in the country and there is little or no nightlife for teenagers who have to be content with boy racing or just hanging around getting on peoples nerves on street corners drinking. My friends and me have been wondering lately what people our age actually do????? All we can find to do is wonder around in the daytime and go to the pub at night. People seem ...

Advantages: Plenty of Shops Disadvantages: Not touristy enough
...incredibly disappointed when I visited Penzance for the first time. It was one of the very last places we visited before the end of our holiday in Cornwall and, although not helped by the fact that it was a very miserable rainy day, there was little to hold out interest in Penzance.
There is not really very much to appeal to tourists in Penzance, and as I believe that tourism is the main income for the County I found that quite hard to understand. ... ...of shops, but they could have been absolutely anywhere.
I certainly won't be rushing back to Penzance and wouldn't recommend the place to anybody looking for a traditional quaint, Cornish holiday experience. If you come from Lincolnshire and your feeling homesick, however, make a bee line for Penzance! ...
