The Pernera beach hotel is in a lovely setting, overlooking the sea. There is a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants less than 5 minutes walk away.
Public areas are spacious, and there are 2 restaurants and a large bar with indoor and outdoor seating.
Half board's guests take their evening meal in the large taverna, with views over the sea.
The pool area is one of the best we have seen, with comfortable sunbeds and parasols. The water was just the right temperature for climbing straight in! This area does tend to fill up quickly, but there are also beds and parasols in the surrounding garden area. The hotel advertises that it has its own private beach. Ignore this, as it is extremely small, and none too pretty. Just walk a couple more feet and you are on the public beach, which is beautiful, and the
water is very clean and clear. Plenty of sunbeds and parasols available to hire, which (in June 2006) worked out at less than £5, for all day.
The hotel has its own small supermarket, which surprisingly worked out at good value for money compared to other local ones. Because the beach is just a few steps from the hotel, you can pop back up the steps, and get a cheap cool drink, instead of having to pay a higher price in the hotel or a nearby beach bar. Ice creams and snacks etc are also reasonable.
If you are on half board you will not be disappointed. The quality, quantity and choice were all fantastic. If you are on a diet, forget it. The choice of desserts is the best I have seen in any hotel on this type of package holiday.
There is something to suit just about anyone, but vegetarians will be a bit limited. Still, the salad selection was ample, and there were grilled vegetables too, but mostly various meats and fish for main courses. A small selection of the usual children's choices was also displayed.
Breakfast too was very satisfactory, with the usual cereals, various breads and preserves, fresh fruits, and yogurts.
For our European neighbours, there was also ham, cheeses and even salad! The cooked breakfast was above average, with bacon, beans, eggs and tomatoes. The sausages were those small spicy ones. As seems to be the case with many med destinations, nothing was ever piping hot, but we are now used to this! We found the orange juice and grapefruit juice very strong, but there is also chilled water available to dilute it.
Plenty of coffee available, ranging from black to cappuccino. I still found them a little strong, but there is also hot milk on tap, which I added to make a nice latte!
Snacks are available in the bar if you feel peckish at lunchtime. These are fairly reasonable, and tasty.
They have an offer in the afternoon, for coffee and cake (or tea) and the price means you get the drink free.
The selection of cakes is scrumptious, the fruit tarts are delicious, and all of the cakes look like works of art!
Moving onto the rooms, in my opinion this was the only thing that was stopping this hotel from gaining 4 stars.
Perhaps we have been spoiled, as we are used to self catering in a roomy apartment. We were expecting a bath, but only had a shower, basin and toilet, in a very small space.
Also the balcony was very small, and lacked one of those fold up type clothes driers. But, I must stress that the room was comfortable, and very clean, with fresh towels everyday, I think though this particular room just needed a bit of refurbishment. Apparently if you upgrade, the rooms are larger, but as we only really sleep in a hotel room, I do not think it is worth the extra expense.
The entertainment team do their best to put on a little show each night, but to be honest they are pretty cringe worthy!
Any music etc is usually finished just before midnight, which suits us fine, as we do not stay up late.
This hotel is great if you just want to chill out in very pleasant surroundings, but if you are thinking of doing a lot of sightseeing, please be aware that you are 2-3 hours away from the major sights like Paphos. You may get their quicker if you hire a car, but there are some truly mad drivers around, so we did not risk it. Even a very short taxi ride to Protaras will have you gripping the edge of your seats!
This area of Cyprus is not very pretty either (scenery wise)
Pernera beach hotel had everything we wanted for a quiet relaxing week away. Service and cleanliness cannot be faulted, and the people of Cyprus were all very friendly.
Just be prepared to ditch the diet whilst you are staying here!!
