The Algarve is known as an all round desitnation, but don't be fooled as I was because it isn't.
Myself and my boyfriend stayed at the Perola Do Algarve between December 4 and 8 so I only got back on Monday.
First things first: After booking through Lastminute.com I found some reviews on trip advisor which were quite negative and made me worry, however, being an open minded person I choose to stay postive.
The hotel itself: The perola is situated at the bottom of a hill, and is opposite a car park and other shabby looking buildings, not a great first impression. Inside is dated and in need of a lick of paint.
However, the room we was givien (207) was great and I couldn't fault it. It was spotless and very spacious, with a dining room, kitchennette and balcony. The only thing here was the TV was a small old one and there was no listing for English tv channels.
It was okay though because you don't go on holiday to stay in hotel and watch tv anyway!
The indoor pool and other health facilities don't open until 2pm and are closed on Sunday. No-one told us this and we actually missed the pool everytime it was open.
Breakfast is medicre. There are beans, small sausages, eggs etc but also breads, a few bits of fruit etc. I wouldn't bother as the Modelo supermarche is right next to the hotel.
I also noticed cracked glass on two glass doors, dirt ceiligns etc.
The hotel seems to be geared towards Spanish, portugese tourists as there was no English entertainment.
It has a strange layout with reception on the 3rd floor, (street level) and bar on 4th floor but breakfast, outdoor pool on the 1st floor.
There were no clear stairs to use so we had to use the lifts all the time and also had to walk around the outside of the hotel on each floor to reach the inside (it was like a 'u' shape with everything squished in the middle of the 'u')
Outside of the hotel there was not much to do apart from eat or drink, a lot of the bars, restuarants were closed for winter howver some were still open.
There are mainly two directions to go, the old town and the strip.
Old town has many traditional nice resturants, Bravos was lovely.
And the strip had lots of bars. Near the strip, near to the Monchelo hotel is a restaurant called Fargos. This is where Nandos peri peri chicken orginated. You have to go there it is amazing!!
Also there is a fab Japanese suishi bar in Oura (a 40 min walk or hop in a taxi) the chef there is brilliant.
Try to visit Oura beach, it is gorgeous and golden. Also hop onto the tourist train, it's cheap and saves your feet!
Overall lots of run down shabby places, not as pretty as Madeira. Also lots of graffitti and poor people (including little kids rumaging in bins)
We paid Ł140 each so wasn't expecting much in the way of the hotel but it is rated as 4* but is more like a 2*.
If you really want to visit Albufeira stay at the Monchelo hotel, we had a sneky peek around this and it was lush.
But don't go during December, this seems to be when all the demolition, roadworks, JCBS on the beaches! and all other improvements are going on!!
