Dinosaurs and diamonds at Perth's museum

Advantages: Modern and spacious, good on history and fauna
Disadvantages: Some dioramas need a makeover

...a loose end in Perth Western Australia, then I recommend you take a look at the WA Museum. This is located at the Perth Cultural Centre, in James Street. It is easy to get to, being near the railway station and Northbridge area in the CBD. FREE BUSES It's worth noting that there are free buses that run within the city area in Perth, and they cover a loop which will drop you off at attractions like this. This review covers my impressions of the museum ...
...you want to learn about Western Australia's land and people. There are guided tours going apparently, weekdays at 2pm, but I didn't coincide with one of these. SCHOOL GROUPS AND FAMILIES I saw quite a few school groups going around, and a very enthusiastic staff attendant had them all laughing and participating in discovering the displays. DINOSAURS On the upper level, you can get to an elaborate Diamonds to Dinosaurs display. A very ferocious ...

Relaxing spot at Perth's Government House

Advantages: Beautifully set out, lavish garden displays and an elegant old building
Disadvantages: A pity Government House itself is not open more often for tours.

...opportunity to look at Government House, located in the city centre. My first view of this stately building (built 1863) was from behind the tall railings that surround the elegant structure, set in lavish gardens. . Through the fence, I could see mysterious Gothic archways, imposing towers, official flags and I must admit, it inspired a closer look. But when I started making inquiries, it appeared that the building itself was only open for guided ...
...a tennis court next to Government house, but I gather that it was not for public use and anyway, I hadn't brought my racquet. If you are interested in more info about the house itself, there is a handy website at www.govhouse.wa.gov.au which gives details of the interior layout. In summing up this review, if you are in Perth, and are seeking a quiet and pleasant respite from shopping or busy traffic, then my advice is to take advantage of the midday ...

A Park built for a King!

Advantages: views across Perth city and Swan River, free.
Disadvantages: None

King's Park and Botanical Gardens are located at the East edge of Perth city centre and overlook the city and Swan River. They are situated on a hill so give fantastic and free views across the whole city and beyond. Below is a link to getting maps of the park and all its facilities and any information onm things but I have described some of these below as well! http://www.kpbg.wa.gov.au/home/index.html The park has 2 cafes, a restaurant, 2 kiosks ...
...design. ***GUIDED WALKS*** If you want to learn about the flowers and the views and about Perth itself, then take a guided walk with one of the volunteer guides. These are FREE (!!) and are run everyday at 10am and 2pm and if there are less than 10 of you then there is no need to book - just turn up to Fraser Avenue, opposite the Visitor's centre. There are a number of different guided walks that operate: Botanic Garden Walk (1-1.5hrs), King's ...

Great for a family day out

Advantages: Nice for a family day out, big area with lots of open space
Disadvantages: Some cages seem too small, not easy to get to via public transport

Perth Zoo has been my testing ground for every new digital camera I have bought and as such I have come to know it quite well as photography is a hobby of mine. By international standards the variety of animals is probably on the small side but 200 odd different species still provides enough diversity to keep things interesting and it's quite easy to spend an entire day there if you can hold the kids pace down to leisurely stroll. They have the ...
...adults can enjoy the warm Perth sunshine on the lawn while still keeping an eye on the kids. The actual animal enclosures for the most part look quite natural and are designed to encourage natural behavior from the animals while still making it easy to see (and photograph) them. There were how ever some enclosures that looked too small to me such as the Sumatran Tiger and the Orangutans. The Zoo does have a reputation for upgrading enclosures regularly ...

AQWA

Advantages: Amazing displays
Disadvantages: It's not very big

This aquarium is well worth a visit. It's displays are spectacular, particularly the underwater tunnel. You can pay to dive in this huge tank which must be quite an experience as there are sharks and rays in here (book in advance if you want to do this). The keepers were very knowledgeable and there was an excellent talk about the seals. There is also a tank where children can put their hands in and feed the fish. On the downside, it isn't particularly ...
