I went to Rockingham in 2001, for 7 weeks and it was one of the best holidays i've ever had!
The place was so clean, there is no smoking allowed out of doors (for risk of grass fires) and no drinking allowed in the streets, which greatly reduces crime. There are plenty of pools to wile away the days if this takes your fancy, or there are gorgeous beaches, some built y man specifically for surfing, they dig great wells in the sand at intervals out a few hundred metres, which creates 10 metre high waves (the first one you come across is absolutely petrifying!)
It is very cheap to rent cars out there, and they all come equipped with what seems like super powered air conditioning, and all mod cons of cars, we never had a single problem with one!
There are museums and gift shops for all, or there are whaling stations, where you can see how they used to do whaling, and various bits and pieces, you can go out fishing on proper trips with professionals, or you can do it yourself from the beach all night (but mind the mosquitos they flock round in their million!!) you can stand at the top of a cliff and watch the sharks swim around the water is so clear at the beaches.
There are loads of fabulous restaurants there, where you can pick up all kinds of food varieties from all over the world, and refills on drinks (non alcoholic of course) are all free for fear of dehydration! Also, about 10 minutes down the road from Rockingham there is a massive shopping mall which is the approximate size of 4 oxford streets!!
i would recommend this trip to anybody, howevr, i went at christmas and found a barbecue on the beach on christmas day a bit weird, so go another time of year! their winter is twice as hot as our summer anyway so makes no difference! G'day!
