I just wanted to write something about Perth as there are only 2 other op's on Perth and they were from visitors so I thought that it would be nice for me to do an op since I live here. I will get the most obvious thing out of the way first
The home of the Black Watch is in Perth, which I am sure most of you will have heard about in the news recently. The Black Watch is the oldest highland regiment, begin in existence since around 1725. The Black Watch museum is housed in Balhousie castle, Hay street, Perth. In the museum there are five rooms with Black Watch memorabilia. Now some other information about facilitieS. Admission charges - Free to all (but you can make a donation if you wish). Any large group such as school's should phone to make an appointment this can also include a guided tour. There is a small car park but it is not big enough for buses. There are toilets and a small gift shop. Opening times, may - september (monday -
friday) 10.00 - 16.30. October - april (monday - friday) 10.00 - 15.30. Not open at the weekends.
Perth also has a museum and art gallery. The building was opened as the museum in 1935, but the building it's self I think was built around the 1820's.
Time of our lives - This part of the museum is all about the local history of the area, with things like farming, types of power, transport and even religion. The best thing in this part is Tahitian Mourners Cloak (there are only five in the world) It is a dance dress and it was worn to entertain king Charles 1 when he visited Perth in the 1630's.
Natural history of perth and kinross gallery - I am not a big fan of this part of the museum, as there is allot of stuffed animals. Don't get me wrong this is great and when I was younger this was my favorite part of the museum. Lots of things about the land even a meteorite and animal habitats.
Applied art displays - This section has some furniture, clocks, globes. There used to be model ship but I am not sure if that is still there.
Beakers, bowls and a thousand flowers - This section is all about the glass industry in Perth. Perth once upon a time was very famous for making glass. The oldest glass factory in the city has recently been demolished to make way for flats. However we still have caithness glass, which is on the outskirts of the city.
Art gallery - This is the final section of the museum. Mainly local artists with local sites. Thomas Duncan, James Mcintosh Patrick, and Donald Urquhart to name but a few. They also have some other artists such as Alberto Morrocco and Joan Bellany. Some other information about facilities. Admission is free to all. Open monday - Saturday 10.00 - 17.00. Extended summer hours july - september, monday - Wednesday 10.00 - 17.00. Thursday 10.00 - 19.00, Friday - saturday 10.00 - 17.00 and sunday 13.00 - 16.30. Venue is situated in the centre of the town, How ever it is not easy to park close to the building. You can get into the building if you are in a wheelchair but you can only access some of the museum and not all of the museum.
The river that runs through Perth is the longest river in Scotland. The river Tay, good for fishing if you like fishing. The largest salmon caught on the river Tay was by a women in 1860's I think not sure about the date on this. There is a plaque dedicated to this women in Rodney Gardens.
The theatre is nice for the whole family. How ever I have not been since I was younger to see the pantomime. I have been in the resturant just a few weeks ago and it is very nice, I would recommend it to anyone.
I would not recommend coming to Perth for the shopping, people do but I would not recommend it. Saying that Perth has been voted the most polite town in the country!
Perth has allot of nice old buildings, allot of churches. Most of which perth and kinross council would rather knock down. Sorry I should not be criticizing. St John's kirk is a lovely building and well worth a visit. As if you decide to climb right to the top which I did under protest I might add, the view over perth is amazing, no other word can describe it.
There are the north and south inches (parks), the north inch is the one that is kept looking nice and the grass is cut on a regular basis, paths are cleaned bins emptied, flowers looked after it is very nice, but you could get hit with any number of sports balls. Very popular for football and golf. If you do decide to take visit to Perth do not visit the south inch. There is a small play park here with a paddling pool for summer and a small boating pond. Word of advice don't look in the pond. The south inch is a disgrace and no matter how many people complain perth and kinross council say that it is clean well go have a look. Teal'c flew into it when he was a pup chasing a duck, I had to take him to the vet incase he had swallowed any water but he had not we got him out in time. Sorry I really do not mean to moan, but this was were I played when I was a child, I have always taken my dog's for walks here, sorry but it just annoys me.
That is it unless you want to know about all the pubs as there are an awful lot of them. Perth has allot more attractions in the surrounding area. I will do some more research and update. I just wanted people to know something about were I live. Thanks for reading and I hope I have not put you off to much. If you have any questions just drop me a line.
