Advantages: Quiet, lots of facilities, good food Disadvantages: Remote from entertainment ( some might see this as an advantage)
A wonderful hotel if you're looking for peace and quiet! Situated on the coast between the airport and the capital Funchal, it has wonderful views of the sea across to the 'deserted isles'. We had booked an apartment and had a large bedroom, large bathroom, lounge and kitchenette, plus a sea-facing balcony. There were sufficient utensils to make a good attempt at cooking, but we were rather lazy and ate out most of the time. A wonderful hotel if you're looking for peace and quiet! Situated on the coast between the airport and the capital Funchal, it has wonderful views of the sea across to the 'deserted isles'. If you're looking for a nice sandy beach to lounge on, forget it. We made a couple of attempts to reach the shoreline about 100 yards away but were defeated both times, once by the fact that the path went into the local houses' gardens, and second by the precipitous path down the crumbly cliff face. The hotel itself is very good indeed. We had booked an apartment and had a large bedroom, large bathroom, lounge and kitchenette, plus a sea-facing balcony. There were sufficient utensils to make a good attempt at cooking, but we were rather lazy and ate out most of the time. The restaurant was good, the food was nice, and the breakfast buffet bar very well stocked with plenty of choices, hot or cold. There was a nice outdoor swimming pool, around which were the usual sun loungers, and there was also a large indoor pool, with jaccuzi, and gym adjacent. There was a games room and a pool table resided on one of the landings, although there was a notice saying no under 14's were allowed to use it. The room was cleaned to a very high standard, no problems at all. There was also a large tv with satellite reception, meaning you could watch BBC world service if you were desparate for a taste of home. The hotel is very remote from any entertainment, although there was a piano in the foyer lounge, but we never saw anybody playing it. The only other accessible place is a small pizzeria about 5 minutes walk away, which did excellent pizzas and pasta dishes. Other than that, you'll have to catch the bus to Funchal, which takes about an hour each way and costs around a pound. There is a mini-bus from the hotel which runs a shuttle during the day, but it gets booked up quite quickly. The staff were all very helpful and most spoke excellent English. All in all, a very nice place to spend a relaxing holiday.
Advantages: Beautiful views, fantastic accommodtion and service Disadvantages: Very quiet, not much entertainment, no night life
...in the luxurious and new Pestana Aparthotel, although in a very quiet area its only 15 minutes from the main city of Funchal and 10 minutes from the airport. The hotel provides a shuttle bus service between the hotel and Funchal daily until early evening, the surrounding countryside was beautiful and I can recommend the local pizza restaurant for a casual meal one evening, although we did get some local produce and had a few meals sitting on our ...

Advantages: Peace and quite. A comfortable place to stay Disadvantages: Windy and isolated, if you dont hire a car.
...and staying at the Atalia Pestana Hotel based in Canico, has exceeded all our expectations.
Having stayed at other hotels and locations at equivalent prices, we have always returned to the Atalia Pestana, where we enjoy the quietness and being away from the hustle and bustle of busy Funchal, where unfortunately one cannot find a parking space. In our view the only way to explore the island and to be independant to appreciate the remote and hidden ... ...We have found the hotel Pestana an inobtrosive and as near as can be a home from home place to stay.
We enjoy the adventurous climb down to the secluded rocky bay. where one can just sit and listen to the sounds of the sea and wild life.
All in all we have found Madeira a wonderful island to visit and hope to have many more times there. ...
