Reviews of Philadelphia Experience »
Philadelphia, New-York's under-rated sibbling.
Advantages: So much to do in this great city Disadvantages: Only Ba fly direct from heathrow.
...Between 1790 and 1800 Philadelphia was the capital city of the USA and is steeped in American History with a multitude of places to visit. The skyline of the downtown area (known locally as 'centre city') is so similar to Canary Wharf in london's East End that on my first visit on looking out of my hotel window on Benjamin Franklyn Boulevard I thought I was back home.
Part of the downtown area is dominated by the Old arts district which comprises ... ...movies are made there, like Philadelphia with Tom Hanks, Witness with Harrison Ford, all the Rocky movies and more recently National Treasure with Nicholas cage.
Coming away from Centre City and the Old arts district the water front at Penns Landing is well worth a visit. It is made up of the waterfront (ok obviously) of the Delaware river, a picturesque and realxing walk with a number of ships that are restaurants. And the focal point of Penns ...

Short Break In Philly
Advantages: South Street is an amazing place, and Independence Hall & Liberty Bell are a must to visit. I highly reccommend the Philly Phlash also. It's a fantastic way to see Philadelphia. Disadvantages: Enterance to museums are quite expensive, and shops/attractions didnt open until 10am when I was there.
I'm from England and visited Philadelphia in March 2001. I only visited Philadelphia for 1 day, but had an amazing time! There was such much to do there - alot more than I ever expected! I would say you definately need more than 1 day to appreciate it in full. The Amtrak train station is great for people travelling into, and out of Philadelphia. The one thing I would definately recommend is taking the "Philly Phlash", which is a sightseeing bus. ... ...runs in a circle around Philadelphia centre, which stops at all the main tourist attractions. I found the drivers on these buses extremely helpful, and very eager to tell you about the area, & suggest places to visit. I didnt quite realise how many films were filmed in Philadelphia either! You can go up the steps to the art museum - jsut as Rocky did in the film! You can also visit the shop Manequine was filled in (Lord & Taylors), along with various ...

I'd rather be in Philadelphia
Advantages: See Above Disadvantages: None
I first went to Philadelphia in May 1998 (as I was in a relationship with someone who lived there). It was my first trip to the U.S. but I immeadiately fell in love with this city.
As Philly is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. (and it used to be the capital before Washington D.C.) it has so much history and it's also not as much of a culture shock for Europeans as the style of the city incorporates a lot of European architecture into the American ... ...all day there shopping.
Philadelphia is about 1 hour West of Atlantic City, 2 hours South of New York and 2 Hours North of Washington - The train system is great (air conditioned, not usually very crowded and its very cheap compared to Britain). However, I took a bus up to New York on my last visit and it was about half the price of the train and took the same amount of time.
My first visit was in May/June when it gets very hot (30C average), and ...

Needs revitalising
Advantages: Steeped in History Disadvantages: Unfriendly concrete Jungle in many area
...Bell and Independance Hall.
Philadelphia is a city steeped in history, surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside on the Eastern coast, and full of a rich and varied culture.
I have been to Philadelphia and have been very disappointed with this city. Although there is a rich culture and a lot of history, combined with a beautiful city line, there is much to dislike about Philadelphia. The sporting fans are famed for be brutal, especially ... ...long.
Having read about Philadelphia when I was younger, living in England, I was extremely surprised that apart from a small core of Philadelphia, the city really is no different from any other major city.
With all the history and importances surrounding Philadelphia, more should be done to revitalise and rekindle Philadelphia. Until this happens I will stay well away from here!
It is a shame, as I am sure there are many great areas in Philadelphia, ...

Brotherly Love
Advantages: a centre for every conceivable activity Disadvantages: direct flights only via BA
I first heard of Philadephia thanks to Tom Hanks who starred ina film of the same name - I visited the city and surrounding area in May 2000. What an enjoyable time I had.
If you go to this city here are some things not to miss:
1. Travel 1 1/2 to the Chesapeake Bay area - stunning views
2. Go to any of the 1000s of hoagie / cheese steak houses. A cheeses steak is like nothing on earth. It basically consists of mince, melted cheese, mushrooms, ... ...these.
3. Go to the city centre and visit the memorial building where they first made the constitution and it is where the delcaration of Independance is housed - a very worthwhile effect.
4. Of course younare only 2 hours from New York - spend a day ot two there - see the sights
5. Go east 1 hour to the beach (only advisable in summer as winter is cold)
You can fly direct via British Airways but for a price - better to go Continental / virgin ...
