The skyline of the downtown area (known locally as 'centre city') is so similar to Canary Wharf in london's East End that on my first visit on looking out of my hotel window on Benjamin Franklyn Boulevard I thought I was back home.
Part of the downtown area is dominated by the Old arts district which comprises of the 45 acre Independance Park where you can find The Liberty Bell exhibition and Independance Hall, (where the American constitution was drafted and signed). Also you can visit the house of Betsy Ross (who made the first flag of the USA) and a variety of art galleries and museums. On the down-side the museums are expensive to get into, apart from a Sunday morning when you can get into the Natural History Museum for just a couple of Dollars.
As most of the Old Arts district is of such historical interest with not only the national buildings, but architecture ranging from American revolution times, colonial, 19th century and modern; you will not find a major hamburger chain to spoil the atmosphere. What you will find is a wonderful array of restaurants, eateries and bars that attracts a really eclectic bunch of people that come nightfall or the weekend really makes the place buzz with life.
Transport links within the city are very good; you can use the numerous buses, an open top tour bus that goes around all the places of interest or even the old trolley car or a horse and carriage.
As you wander around the city you may recognise quite a bit of it; I was certainly surprised at how many movies are made there, like Philadelphia with Tom Hanks, Witness with Harrison Ford, all the Rocky movies and more recently National Treasure with Nicholas cage.
Coming away from Centre City and the Old arts district the water front at Penns Landing is well worth a visit. It is made up of the waterfront (ok obviously) of the Delaware river, a picturesque and realxing walk with a number of ships that are restaurants. And the focal point of Penns Landing is South Street, which I can only describe as Philadelphia's equivelant to Camden Lock; enjoying the same mixture of funky people, quirky stores, fashion, bars, clubs and great places to eat.
Look out for 'The Duck' on South Street; an amphibious touring bus that takes you on a trip of South Street, Penns landing and the Old arts district and then James Bond stylee right onto the Delaware river.
While you are on South Street hang a right onto South 2nd street and stroll down to the Mummers Museum. The Mummers are a large collection of string and brass bands and dancing troupes (all male) that are a Philadelphia institution in their own right. During various holidays they parade through Philadelphia dressed in wonderful and colourful costumes and if you arer lucky enough to be around over New-Year, the new-year day parade is a must see that is televised nation-wide.
Go to Philly; be entertained by the music, informed by the history, make friends with the people, and get fat with the local delicacy; The Philadelphia Cheese Steak.
I first went to Philadelphia in May 1998 (as I was in a relationship with someone who lived there). It was my first trip to the U.S. but I immeadiately fell in love with this city.
As Philly is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. (and it used to be the capital before Washington D.C.) it has so much history and it's also not as much of a culture shock for Europeans as the style of the city incorporates a lot of European architecture into the American ... ...all day there shopping.
Philadelphia is about 1 hour West of Atlantic City, 2 hours South of New York and 2 Hours North of Washington - The train system is great (air conditioned, not usually very crowded and its very cheap compared to Britain). However, I took a bus up to New York on my last visit and it was about half the price of the train and took the same amount of time.
My first visit was in May/June when it gets very hot (30C average), and ...

Advantages: South Street is an amazing place, and Independence Hall & Liberty Bell are a must to visit. I highly reccommend the Philly Phlash also. It's a fantastic way to see Philadelphia. Disadvantages: Enterance to museums are quite expensive, and shops/attractions didnt open until 10am when I was there.
I'm from England and visited Philadelphia in March 2001. I only visited Philadelphia for 1 day, but had an amazing time! There was such much to do there - alot more than I ever expected! I would say you definately need more than 1 day to appreciate it in full. The Amtrak train station is great for people travelling into, and out of Philadelphia. The one thing I would definately recommend is taking the "Philly Phlash", which is a sightseeing bus. ... ...runs in a circle around Philadelphia centre, which stops at all the main tourist attractions. I found the drivers on these buses extremely helpful, and very eager to tell you about the area, & suggest places to visit. I didnt quite realise how many films were filmed in Philadelphia either! You can go up the steps to the art museum - jsut as Rocky did in the film! You can also visit the shop Manequine was filled in (Lord & Taylors), along with various ...

I first heard of Philadephia thanks to Tom Hanks who starred ina film of the same name - I visited the city and surrounding area in May 2000. What an enjoyable time I had.
If you go to this city here are some things not to miss:
1. Travel 1 1/2 to the Chesapeake Bay area - stunning views
2. Go to any of the 1000s of hoagie / cheese steak houses. A cheeses steak is like nothing on earth. It basically consists of mince, melted cheese, mushrooms, ... ...these.
3. Go to the city centre and visit the memorial building where they first made the constitution and it is where the delcaration of Independance is housed - a very worthwhile effect.
4. Of course younare only 2 hours from New York - spend a day ot two there - see the sights
5. Go east 1 hour to the beach (only advisable in summer as winter is cold)
You can fly direct via British Airways but for a price - better to go Continental / virgin ...

Philadelphia is a city steeped in history, surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside on the Eastern coast, and full of a rich and varied culture.
I have been to Philadelphia and have been very disappointed with this city. Although there is a rich culture and a lot of history, combined with a beautiful city line, there is much to dislike about Philadelphia. The sporting fans are famed for be brutal, especially ... ...long.
Having read about Philadelphia when I was younger, living in England, I was extremely surprised that apart from a small core of Philadelphia, the city really is no different from any other major city.
With all the history and importances surrounding Philadelphia, more should be done to revitalise and rekindle Philadelphia. Until this happens I will stay well away from here!
It is a shame, as I am sure there are many great areas in Philadelphia, ...

Philadelphia is like a little New York
Ahhhh to see New York without the crowds. This is the challenge.
I love Philadelphia.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BEST TIME TO VISIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I?ve found that the best time to visit Philadelphia is on Memorial Day [May 31 of every year].
Philadelphia celebrates Memorial Day in a big way, yet there are no major crowds. [Guess everyone hasn?t found out about this yet].
We went to the celebration by accident. We had just come to see parts of Philadelphia in general and wanted to see the LIBERTY BELL.
And right across from there, all of a sudden, there was an assembly of people who were dressed like colonial men and women. And, there were men who were uniformed with the rifles and all.
The women?s skirt hoops were so big you could hide a large microwave under them ...

Amman is the city capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its origins are dated back to the Neolithic age (about 6500 BC) as proved by the archaeological finds in the area.
Amman, like Rome, lays on seven hills that here are called "Jabal".
Amman has seen the rising and the falling of many civilizations.
In the 3rd century BC its name was Rabath Ammon; then was dominated by the Assyrians followed by the Persians. The Greeks crossed the Aegean sea and subdued the Jordanians and called the city "Philadelphia".
During the 1st century BC, Philadelphia was subdued by the Romans and became part of "Decapolis", an alliance of 10 cities.
In 324 AD, the Christian faith became the religion of the Roman Empire and Philadelphia was nominated as residence of the bishop. It was the beginning of the Byzantine age.
The name "Amman ...

Advantages: Very close to city centre, comfortable rooms, good amenities Disadvantages: Local area is a bit grubby, hotel is very obviously a chain and is bland in places
Ah, Philadelphia ? I don?t think that any visit to the East Coast would be complete without a trip to the vibrant ?City of Brotherly Love?. On my recent trip, I spent 2 days in Philly and chose this hotel mainly because of its convenient location and Sheraton?s status as a reputable chain.
~~LOCATION AND DETAILS~~
With 365 rooms, the Sheraton Society Hill is a medium to large chain hotel at the edge of Philadelphia city centre. It?s located (unsurprisingly) on Society Hill, a fairly traditional part of Philadelphia near to the Delaware River docks. The actual street the hotel is situated on is cobbled and quite nice, plus it is a convenient location to get to the main city centre, which is about 5 blocks/20 minutes walk away. Philadelphia is pretty diverse and there are plenty of opportunities to get some food in the area ...
