I have to admit that had I been asked to create a list of places that I wanted to visit a couple of years ago, Athens probably wouldn't have been one of the top destinations. However, when my best friend and future best man decided that he was going to take a year out to teach English in the city, it seemed to good an excuse not to fly out there.

Although he did offer us the use of his flat while we were out there, the fact that we had yet to meet his flat mate meant that we decided to look for a place to stay. Using the fact that I get a discount through hotelopia.co.uk, I dived right in to try to find a nice 3* which would be close to both my friends flat, and the main attractions of the city. The majority of matches that came up were in the area around Omonia Square to the north of the Acropolis but we wanted to be south to be close to his flat and discovered this little place. It looked nice enough on the website so we thought, 'Let's go for it!'

We arrived in Athens on the Saturday evening and once we had met up with my friend, we grabbed a taxi to take us to the hotel. After becoming completely disorientated during the taxi 'experience' I was a little scared that we would never be able to find our way back but first things first, we had to check in. This was quick and smooth (the advantages of paying in advance) and we caught the lift up to our floor.

Our last trip away saw us staying in a very nice 4* hotel in Prague (see my other reviews) and we weren't sure what to expect in this place as although listed as a 3* hotel, the price was closer to that of a 2*. However, first impressions were good. The room was quite spacious and looked to be recently renovated. Our double did exist of two singles pushed together but apart from that, we had no quarrels. The room really paid for itself though when we stepped onto the balcony and were greeted with a view of the Acropolis just a few hundred metres away. You almost felt that you could reach out and touch it!

As it had been several hours since we had last eaten we decided to use my friend's knowledge of the city and try and risk finding our way out of the rabbit warren we had entered. Thankfully, the route to the nearest metro station took just 5mins and was dead simple. The rabbit warren effect had been caused by one-way streets and the walk was very easy, taking us past the new (but yet unopened) Acropolis museum.

Over the course of our stay, we grew to really enjoy our hotel. Its central location meant that we could meet up in the morning in the reception area and be at the major sites within minutes, very useful if on a site-seeing visit.

As with anything, there are always downsides to hotels and this one was no exception. The hotel was bed + breakfast only as it didn't have its own kitchens so you had to eat out of an evening but that was no real problem. My gripe was that of a morning the range was quite limited with just a few breads, cereals and fruits (not great for my girlfriend who has coeliacs and cannot eat gluten). The walls in the hotel weren't particularly thick so you could hear what was going on elsewhere and the huge plus for me (the view) was only relevant in at most half the rooms.

Given this though, I still think that the hotel was well worth staying in and I would happily return. You can book direct but it does appear to no longer be on hotelopia due to their rotation policy.

If you are staying in Greece for a long weekend and want a reasonably cheap place to stay then this hotel is well worth a visit and it is a sign of its ability that we are looking to stay there again when we visit my friend again in May.
