When I visited Heidelberg for the first time, the Philosophenweg was at the top of the to-do list for me. It's on the opposite side of the river to the old town and the castle, which means that you get a great view of them!

The philosopher's way is a beautiful trail said to have been walked by many famous thinkers. Note that it is entirely uphill, so might not be suitable for everyone! It's quite steep but worth it if you can manage the walk.

As I said, the Philosophers' Way is on the opposite side of the river to the old town and the castle. To get to it from the old town, you can cross the old bridge (the Carl Theodor Bridge which, by the way, is a big attraction in itself and if I can think of enough to say, maybe I'll write a review of the bridge too). Anyone will be able to point you to this as it's very famous! Once you cross the bridge, follow the river along to your left (you can either go down the steps and walk along the tiny footpath right beside the river, or follow the road) until you get to the next bridge. The road to your right has some nice shops and (when I was there, at any rate) a lovely and quite reasonably priced Italian restaurant. Here is the bottom of the Philosophers' Way!

Even if you only walk fifty metres, you find yourself surrounded by flowers and greenery and with a wonderful view of the river and castle. Continue and you'll follow a zig-zag path through beautiful flora and see the city pan out in front of you. I think I used a whole film in my camera that afternoon, because every time I looked down I thought "the view can't get any more beautiful and breathtaking than this - I'll take a photograph", but minutes later I was proved wrong and was snapping again.

You'll probably need to reserve most of the day for this if you really want to get the most out of it. I left it until the afternoon and had to turn back because it was getting too dark. It will probably take a good 5 or 6 hours if you walk at a relaxed pace and take everything in. Also you're following a woodland-type trail, so if it rains you get muddy! Wait for a sunny day and you'll be comfortable and get a better view. Take a bottle of water with you too, as the only refreshments available are from a tiny shack at the bottom of the hill.

If you want to see one of the best views in and of Heidelberg, check out the Philosophenweg. You won't be disappointed.

Thank you for this review, that was a walk down memory lane for me, as I still have the photos from here taken in the snow when I stayed in a Verbindung in Heidelberg more than 20 years ago. Adam
