Advantages Advantages Full of history, a good place to start trying to understand Cambodia

Disadvantages Disadvantages Still recovering from its more recent history

The Pearl of Asia they used to call it: this city on the banks of the mighty Mekong, where an old lady rescued four Buddha images from the riverbank and installed them on the hill, subsequently named in her honour. Phnom Penh. The hill of Penh. As Angkor fell and trade became as much of a power base as military might, the Khmer moved their capital to Phnom Penh, which grew rich on dealings with China and Indonesia until China's increasing grip on international trade arrested this development. Then the Khmer found themselves caught up in the rivalry, both economic and military, between the ... more

Advantages Advantages Really cheap, beautiful areas around the Independence Monument, lots of markets!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Most the attractions are about death/Khmer Rouge

Ah.. Sweet Phnom Penh! I knew the second I arrived here that I would love it. I arrived from Battambang by bus, and took a tuk tuk straight to Okay Guesthouse. I never expected the capital city of such a poor country to be so green and interesting. When you first arrive in Phnom Penh, you'll be harassed by moto/tuk tuk drivers. At first it might annoy you, but you have to understand that they live in an extremely poor, corrupt country. Many of the drivers actually come from outside the capital in search of a good income to send back to their families. They will always offer a price that's ... more

My visit to Angkor Wat and the nearby city of Siem Reap is over. Now I'm here, on board of this hydrofoil directed to Phnom Penh. By the colour of the Tonle Sap River waters it seems to navigate more in a chocolate than in a river. Along the river banks come into sight and disappear fishermen villages, pagodas, temples and vegetation, a lot of green and rich vegetation. Cambodia was for 70 years under the French colonial rules followed by the dark years of the Red Khmer dictatorship. Then came the 10 years Vietnamese occupation. Now the Cambodians are trying to escape from a very difficult ... more

Advantages Advantages Extremely friendly and helpful people will make your stay worthwhile.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Unsafe a nights and not really that super cheap due to USD being widely used.

Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia. Its a great city still undergoing lots of development with lots of places to visit and sights to see as the city is divided into two banks of the river. Getting into Phnom Penh is easy via direct flights from all the major neighbouring cities like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and others. In the last five years especially, the number of businesses and restaurants catering to tourists has exploded, and Phnom Penh offers just about anything a much larger and more developed capital could. Phnom Penh is also the stop-over point for many tourists venturing to the ... more

Advantages Advantages Somewhere to tell your friends about

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dangerous and they'll probably think your mad

Having travelled around S.E. Asia for 12 months I have to say that Phnom Penh was the trickiest place I went to. Not the place to go for anyone who is inexperienced in travel. Flying into Phnom Penh from Thailand (U-Tapou Airport) was straight forward and only takes about an hour. Anything can be brought or sold here and I mean anything. There are simply no rules or regulations. If you come from England where gun laws are strict you will be amazed at how many people carry guns. The biggest market is the Russian Market or known locally as “Tool Tom Poong Market”. Apart from the ... more
