Once you have left the boat you will find yourself on a large walkway with buildings on one side and the open water on the other! It is very strange to know you are in a city with no roads! Once you are off the boat, take a left as this will lead you to St Marks Square and the hub of Venice.
As you are walking along (depending on how far up you were dropped) you may go over a number of stunning bridge that traverse the smaller canals running into the city. Take a look to your right as you go over and you will see some picture postcard views of the local life and houses.
Before you reach the entrance to St Marks Square you will go over a slightly larger bridge and you will probably see many people looking to the right and photographing. This is because up this last channel is the famous Bridge of Sighs. This bridge joins the prison of Venice with the old court house (part of the palace of the dogs) and this was known as the last look the prisoners would have before they went into their cell in prison.
Once you have crossed this bridge you will see an opening in the buildings, this is the entrance to St Marks Square. On your right is the famous palace and you will pass through the centre of 2 columns. This part of the square was built a while after the original part when the new palazzo was built. As you are entering the square on your right is the palace and as you past this you will see the over whelming Basilica. On this from right to left, the story of St Mark is told in picture paintings.
To your left is the main square (trapezoid) and is an impressive site! Surround on 3 sides by columns and the fourth being the front of the basilica, this is breathtaking no matter time of day, year or how busy. By night this is a magical place where live orchestra's play and couples of all ages dance in the low light. A real tear jerking moment in you are deeply in love!
If you visit this square, don't miss the opportunity to go inside the Basilica. You may have to queue a little and you cannot take in rucksacks or large bags, but it is all well worth it! I have been in some impressive churches and cathedrals in my time but this takes your breath away. The architecture and art is the finest I have ever witnessed!
Take a walk upstairs (they are quite steep) and you can go out at the front on the roof and look over the square and Venice. This a superb opportunity to witness the glory of the square in this beautiful city.
There are two famous clocks in the square. One is a late edition and is in a tower of its own (by late edition I mean the 1500s although please don't quote me on this date as I am not sure!) It is possible for you to go up this tower and witness Venice from a high! The second is often missed and is actually directly opposite you on entering the square as above. It is very famous for having many clock faces and for its extraordinary detail.
As most will advise you, the cost of a coffee in one of the café's around the square is pretty expensive as you are paying for the location. I settled for a can of coke on one of the steps for the same effect!!
There are a lot of pigeons in the square but the numbers are dwindling over the years. If you do wish to feed them, you MUST buy only the food the official sellers will give you as this is treated with a substance that can make the birds infertile. This is used to control the numbers of pigeons that can become health hazard!
Be wary of some of the souvenir stands in the square as quite often just off the square you can buy exactly the same at half the price!!
Venice is a truly magical city and if you make it as far as St Mark's square, please don't stop here!! It is not a difficult city to navigate, look high on the corners of buildings for signs to the landmark attractions and remember, all paths lead to the square somehow!!
There is some fabulous shopping in Venice, and other places of great interest are the Rialto Bridge (my personal favourite), the Academia (the less famous, but only Wooden Bridge over the Grand Canal), and my favourite eatery the Café Di Rialto.
If you do go I hope you have a fabulous time, I am very jealous! This is by far my favourite city in the whole world! Please mail me if you have any specific questions about the city and I will offer help and advice if I can!

PIAZZA SAN MARCO. is like falling in love with a Beautiful Woman, when with her you can not stay long enough, when away you can not wait to return to her.
You may speak to people who have only visited her on a Day trip, they will probably have not been impressed. They will only have seen her in the company of thousands.
To see the Piazza at its best and Romantic you must Visit her late at night with your wife, husband, lover or just a friend. The ... ...really highlights the shape of the square.
When you enter from the Grand Canal DO NOT WALK BETWEEN the two columns, in the past you only passed between when being sent for execution.
The Doges Palace is on your right, this is well worth a Tour, get there early to beat the queues. (Day Trippers normally decend on Venice about 09:45). Beautiful rooms and full of history. On this trip you cross over the Bridge of sighs to visit the prison.

Advantages: Beautiful, centre of town Disadvantages: Pidgeons. Tourists.
Napoleon called it "the finest drawing room in Europe." A big square like those all throughout Europe, but a special one because its in Venice. No car noises nearby, just you and the square..
At dusk the square empties on weeknights as everyone goes home and it can be an eerie place (as its so quiet with no cars) when no one else is around, though of course as at a tourist attraction someone will always be nearby. Sit down for a coffee, a place ... ...seat in the square (rather than inside the coffee shop) and watch all the other tourists pass by.. be careful which cafe you sit at because they each take turns in having musicians play and if you sit at the one that has the musicians working, you will pay a 5 euro charge per person - regardless of what you order. Note the building with the tower to the side of the square, for a few euros you can catch a lift up to the top and have a great view over ...

Advantages: Gorgeous place in the evening Disadvantages: Makes you feel a bit lonely if single!
St. Mark's Square can change completely between day and arly evening. In the day it is really really busy, with just too many tourists all rushing around, taking lots of pictures of the beautiful buildings. Not forgetting all the pigeons which are flying around and leaving their "mark" everywhere. So all in all its a bit of a stressful time as you try not to bump into anyone or get crapped on by a pigeon, as a result you do miss the actual beauty ... ...is NOT to sit down for a coffee in St Mark's Square, it will set you back 14 Euros each!!!
The sun sets and in St. Mark's Square, the pigeons and millions of tourists all disappear in the evening, leaving a beautifully romantic setting. The square is lit up with lights going around the top of buildings. There are waiters all dressed up in dinner suits serving people. There are a few small groups of professional musicians dotted around the square ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square), Venice"
Advantages: Beautiful Disadvantages: Can't think of any
Yes, another Venice review...Probably my last one though...
Okay...Saint Mark's Basilica (Basilica di SanMarco) was built in 1071, and is in Venice, at StMark's Square (PiazzaSanMarco).
The square can be hard to find, or very easy, depending on how good you are at navigating the streets (needless to say, we had a bit of a struggle!) Even though the basilica is enormous, I couldn't see it at all until we stumbled straight onto StMark's Square, where it suddenly leaps out on you, dominating the place. If ever you go to Venice I would strongly recommend a trip to StMarksSquare, as this building is probably one of the most amazing you will ever see.
The thing that struck me first of all was the sheer colossal size of it. It is toweringly tall, and extemely wide, I have never seen anything like it. I was expecting to see ...
Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: Some things can be expensive!
a special wedding anniversary and we booked a junior suite for our 2 nights in the Metropole hotel- all I can say is... Fabulous!
The best way to get around is by water bus, they run all day and into the night too, wear comfortable shoes and get walking because theres so much to see. A good map and a guidebook are a must but apart from that, just wander round and see where your feet take you!
The Grand Canal is fantastic and I never got tired of simply sitting on the water buses going up and down, there's always something else to see.
One tip- on each water bus, the most popular seats are the ones outside so you have to make sure you're at the front of the queue to get those because people run for those seats first.
The Rialto bridge has some good shopping and restuarants but can be quite busy.
StMarkssquare (PiazzaSanMarco) is ...
