Advantages: Short walk from the centre, varied exhibitions, close to the Dean Gallery
Disadvantages: Works exhibited are a bit hit and miss (maybe thats just modern art for you!), small

...The Scottish National Museum for Modern Art is situated across from its sister gallery (The Dean Gallery). A number of visits have shown the displays to be varied and changing although the quality of exhibitions can vary. It is situated within grounds replete with sculpture, and although it is a small gallery, it is well worth a visit, especially when combined with the Dean. Probably the best loved exhibit is that of the American Tourists, a sculpture of the stereotypical vistors Edinburgh gets from the US. They have frequently confused vistors with their life like appearance, and really need to be observed a while to make sure they are not real!... Read review

...The Millennium Galleries in Sheffield were recently created as part of the "Heart of the City" project, which is an ongoing rejuvenation project in Sheffield that is partly funded by National Lottery money. The Millennium Galleries opened in the Spring of 2001. They are situated right in the middle of Sheffield's City Centre, adjacent to the main Central Library Building. From the outside of the Building there is nothing to particularly indicate what you are likely to find inside. It is a modern Building constructed mainly of Glass and White Concrete, but the entrance is quite small and narrow, making it the sort of place that you could quite easily walk past. As you walk through the doors however you quickly realise that this is a very modern Building. The floors are Marble and the Ceilings are very high, creating a very spacious... Read review

...The Virginia Galleries is sadly no longer with us. It was forced out of business by the marketing (and cover-up merchant) Marks and Spencers. Marks and Spencers planned an overhaul of their Argyle Street branch, scheduled for completion in Nov. 1999. It was duly completed, but at the cost of many stall holders at the Virginia Galleries. While building work was ongoing at the West side of the building, the access to the Virginia Galleries had to be closed. The workers therein then lost profits. While undertaking 'necessary' building work, the foundations of the Virginia Galleries were disturbed and caused a subsidence. This turned out to be disastrous for the property, effectively closing it permanently. Protests were made outside Marks and Spencers by the workers, but it was to no avail, sadly a multinational company cannot... Read review
