Advantages: Large piste area. Disadvantages: Limited beginner areas
...I've been skiing since i was 12, now 23, so a good 12 years of travelling europe trying out different ski resorts, from a drinkers point of view and a non drinkers point of view.
I've no been to Val thornes 2 times, the last one being two years ago, This followed on from the pervious year.
2000 was the first time i've been to Val thornes, this was on a student break with my university ski club. So the holiday was started with a typical, 25 hour coach trip. ( I suggest flying out)
Being a big fan of skiing i'd checked the snow everday for a good 2 months before i went. I the was a ton of it.
This really made the holiday, not only could we ski in Valthorens, but could get over to the all of 3 valees. (Ski over if you dare, we got lost a good 3 or 4 times, panic starts to set in when its 5:15 and all the lifts are starting...

Advantages: Some really good green runs for the novice boarder. Disadvantages: Expensive
...If you are a novice boarder of have never ventured to ValThorens then this is the review for you. I went for a week over new years this year. Best new years i have ever had.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ValThorens is boasted as being the highest ski resort in Europe at 2300 m altitude and is also the summit of the 3 Vallées, the largest ski area in the world.
I stayed at Le Portillo, located towards the top end of the village. It's smack bang in the middle of everything. Reasonablly priced as well. I had a kitchenette room which meant that i saved money by not eating out every day.
Ski Passes
----------------
An adult half day pass for ValThorens slopes costs 27 Euros with a full day costing 34 Euros. Make sure that you ask for insurance with these at an additional 2...

Advantages: Great snow, masses of pistes, good atmosphere Disadvantages: Slightly disorganised at times
...ValThorens is an excellent ski resort for intermediate and advanced skiers. The high altitiude of the resort (2200m-3300m) guarantees snow even in April. Going late in the season brings a number of advantages : The weather is usually better, the days longer and the pistes and lifts are emptier. Most lifts are chairlifts or cable cars.
ValThorens has a large ski area spread out over 3 valleys with over 100km of pistes. There are plenty of long blue runs to warm up on and some wonderful red runs.
The apartments are right next to the piste – it is usually possible to ski right to the door of your apartment.
Eating out – there are plenty of restaurants and fast food joints. ValThorens is a real village so has more atmosphere than many other ski resorts. Night life is adequate with plenty of bars and several discotheques...
