Piran (Slovenia)

... All over Slovenia people tell you to visit Piran, nobody recommends any others from the handful of towns on the Slovenian littoral. In November 2005 (my third visit to Slovenia) I finally got down to the coast to find out if what they said was justified. GETTTING THERE Whilst Piran ... Read review

(Summertime) Pleasures of Piran

Advantages: Beautiful, historic, great restaurants
Disadvantages: Everything closed in November! Too quiet for some

...THERE

Whilst Piran is only about ninety minutes from Slovenia's capital, Ljubljana getting there can be a little problematic. The train only takes you a far as Koper, an industrial town slightly north of Piran, but still on the coast - from there you need to take a bus, a twenty minute ride. The train takes roughly the same amount of time as the bus so you may as well go by bus all the way.

If you go by car you avoid ...
...Piran is so small that at weekends and during the summer there is virtually nowhere to park on the small peninsular on which Piran sits.

It is possible to visit Piran as a day trip (or longer of course if you prefer) from north-eastern Italy (from Trieste by bus or ferry - the latter in the high season only) or from northern Croatia (Pula is less than an hour away).

WHAT ITS LIKE

Piran is a town that has ... more

Piranhas in Pyjamas

Advantages: cheap, clean, quiet
Disadvantages: no beach, not a lot of nightlife

...is no actual beach in Piran :-(. Getting there: Piran is probably best reached by car, since public transport options are somewhat limited. Although the main centre of Piran is pedestrian only (I would defy anyone to get anything larger than a moped through its narrow streets!) arriving by car would still be the definite preferred method of transport, making the route from Italy, Austria or Croatia, or even Ljubljana an easier one. Otherwise you ...
...of getting anyway. Coaches leave Piran for Ljubljana (2.5 hours several daily – an excellent trip through the Triglav National Park) Pula (Croatia 3 hours – 1 daily) and Trieste (1.5 hours – several daily) as well as frequent shuttle services to Koper (via Portoroz – 40 mins). Trains are not a lot quicker, as you can only get as close as Koper and the bus connections do not seem to dovetail that well really, although during the high season, the buses ...

Beautiful Piran

Advantages: Small, Beautiful views of the adriatic,
Disadvantages: Don't take your car, the streets are tiny!

...of Slovenia life then perhaps Piran is an ideal choice. Arriving from Lake Bled on a day trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect and granted, Piran is not the nightlife capital of the world, but personally peace and tranquillity are ideal alternatives. Piran has numerous little alleyways leading to excellent restaurants all serving tasty local fish dishes to tempt even the most expert pallet. Check out the Neptune a bistro about a two minute walk from ...
...Another must in Piran is a visit to the “Bell Tower”. It costs about 2-3 Tollar (uk = 50p), the Slovenia local currency. You make your way up about eight flights of stairs, avoid going on the hour or you encounter the full benefit of the huge bells, and reach a small Bell house where you can look out and enjoy the magnificent views onto the Adriatic, across the terracotta roofs of the town. The real benefit is that there is a very helpful Tourist ...

Small, but perfectly formed

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, friendly people, lots to see and do, good value for money
Disadvantages: Limited range of restaurants (mostly pizza and seafood)

I visited Slovenia in June of 2004 for 8 days, visiting the capital city Ljubljana, Lake Bohinj and Piran. I bought flights with Easyjet, then booked hotels individually on the web and got around by bus. LJUBLJANA This is the capital city of Slovenia. It looks very similar to lots of other central European cities, it particularly reminded me of Salzburg. Budget accomodation is limited, I stayed in a hotel in the outskirts of town (a bus ride away) called the 'Bit Center'. It was clean and cheap (about £25 per night for a double). Ljubljana is a lovely place just to wander around, there are lots of interesting buildings and also a big 'cafe culture' scene. At night time, either side of the river that runs through the centre is lined with lively bars and the atmosphere is great. LAKE BOHINJ Bohinj is near the better know ...

Review of General: Slovenia

The nicest place that I ever saw!!!

Advantages: beautiful, cheap and safe place
Disadvantages: anithing

First of all, I want to apologize of my english, cause I'm an spanish girl! Sorry! Last summer I was for 2 months working in Ljubljana. It was one of the best places where I ever been. Ljubljana it's called "the little Prag", and it is true. I think it's the best way to explain how is Ljubljana. It is a very nice place, and also you can visit: Bled (a maravellous lake), Bohinj (a natural park), Nova Gorica region, the slovenian coast (Piran, Izola & Portoroz), and of course, the caves (Postojna and Predjama casttle). I'm in love with Slovenia, and maindly Ljubljana. So, I recomaind to all of you to visit this fantastic place!! The other thing that impressed to me so much was the slovenian people. They are very very friendly and kind. And also, they speak perfetly english and most of them german too. So, you are not to have any ...
