Picture this it’s 9am in the morning and you’re descending from a steep mountainous road with numerous switchbacks when you catch sight of a small fishing village on the horizon. The road leads you past a charming little harbour which is peaceful and tranquil and soon you arrive in a small circular market place, which denotes the heart of this beautiful village, you have just arrived in Piran.
If you are visiting Slovenia and are looking for a real taste of Slovenia life then perhaps Piran is an ideal choice. Arriving from Lake Bled on a day trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect and granted, Piran is not the nightlife capital of the world, but personally peace and tranquillity are ideal alternatives.
Piran has numerous little alleyways leading to excellent restaurants all serving tasty local fish dishes to tempt even the most expert pallet.
Check out the Neptune a bistro about a two minute walk from the market place, who do a wonderful “noki” dish, which is a local speciality.
Another must in Piran is a visit to the “Bell Tower”. It costs about 2-3 Tollar (uk = 50p), the Slovenia local currency. You make your way up about eight flights of stairs, avoid going on the hour or you encounter the full benefit of the huge bells, and reach a small Bell house where you can look out and enjoy the magnificent views onto the Adriatic, across the terracotta roofs of the town.
The real benefit is that there is a very helpful Tourist Information office located on the main market place, who speak exceptionally good English. They were very helpful in providing walking maps and an overview of things to do in the local area.
