Pizza Hut Express in Eldon Square isn’t the best advertised of places, and I had never heard of it before even though I must have passed by it quite a few times. I only noticed it today when I was out shopping with a friend in Newcastle, and we were looking for somewhere to go for lunch after looking around New Look. Pizza Hut Express is directly opposite New Look as you come out of the top floor exit, so because we were hungry we went straight for the nearest option, it looked cheap enough so we decided we might as well.
At first glance it doesn’t seem like much, in truth it isn’t; there are two booths, some high bench seating and a few low tables with stools. There weren’t that many people there but we didn’t think too much of this as it was before 12, and we didn’t mind it either as it would have been hard to find a seat with the small amount available.
The location is something that appeals to me, its perfect for shopping trips to town. New Look is one of my favourite shops, it’s guaranteed that I’ll go there every time that I’m in Newcastle so its quite convenient, and unlike some restaurants you don’t need a long walk to get there as its quite central, and can get there so easily from many places.
The prices are really reasonable, one of the main reasons that I came here. A pizza meal costs £4.09 (much better if you have change!) which includes a small, individual pizza of your choice with either seasoned fries or a side salad and a refillable pepsi drink. This is much cheaper than the normal pizza hut, and quite good value especially considering its a sit down place.
There are 5 choices of pizza that I can remember, all were included in the meal deal and I think all of them cost £2.79 – margherita, chicken supreme, pepperoni, vegetable supreme and barbeque. These are all on a base that isn’t quite deep pan, but it isn’t thin either, they also have a really nice tomato sauce covered with the melted cheese. I chose chicken supreme which had pieces of chicken breast, yellow peppers, onions and mushrooms on it along with the normal cheese and tomato sauce, it was a really nice pizza which was just the right size, I only just managed to finish it all. The one thing that I remembered having stood out was how nice the crust was, as I normally just pull it off and leave it.
Along with my chicken supreme, I chose the seasoned/spicy fries over the salad and the refillable Pepsi drink. The fries really stood out with the subtle spice, and they were so much nicer than the fries that you normally get in fast food places, cardboard tasting McDonalds chips these were not! Instead of filling up the drink for you, they simply gave you a cup, something which I prefer because I don’t normally like ice in my drinks but they seem to always give you half drink, half ice anyway. There was a choice of pepsi, pepsi max, tango orange and 7-up, along with an ice machine so you could fill it up to as much or as little as you wanted.
I did see a desserts menu, but at the time I wasn’t hungry enough for a dessert, although I can remember the prices seemed reasonable and they had some nice sounding things, the “warm cookie dough,” sounded particularly nice and I may have to try it another time.
The other thing that I really liked about Pizza Hut Express was the ‘express,’ it was really fast, and if I was a quick eater then I would have been out of there in no time, as it happened me and my friend sat there for a while having a slow lunch.
Overall, I would recommend this, but it seems to be aimed more towards teenagers and people in a rush because there are much nicer places you can go to in Newcastle, just they’ll be a lot more expensive and take up quite a bit more time.
