Pizza Organic, Ealing

...unlucky one

Pizza Organic is a small chain owned by Pizza piazza. They have 7 sites based in Ealing, Redhill (Surrey), Old brompton Rd(London),
Gloucester Rd(London),Ruislip, Godalming & Beaconsfield. They serve a mostly Italian menu and almost all of their products are Organic. Simply from this I should have known I was making a mistake – its organic, except the ham, pepperoni, blue cheese, salami & fish (which is wild caught)
...with mixing your cheese on pizza is that you don’t actually get to taste any of them. This was the case this time, mozzarella was unnoticeable & the red Leicester simply turned the top of the pizza into an orange blob reminiscent of a teenagers face. The pepperoni was bland, garlic unnoticeable, peppers (which I don’t normally manage in pizza express as theyre too hot) very mild. Someone commented on one of my previous reviews that I am not having much luck when I eat out, well here goes for another unlucky one

For our sins we went to the Ealing one

From Ealing central tube station the restaurants a 6 minute bus ride to the outskirts of Ealing, Using multimap (W5 1QX) the closest tube station is actually Perivale on the central line but we were in Ealing and we caught the bus. There’s a bus stop directly outside the restaurant on both sides of the road so you don’t have far to walk if its raining, as it was

The restaurant itself is medium sized, about room for 100 people when full (doubt that happens often), seating is set out regimentally on a tiled floor, paintings on the walls along with rusty air conditioning units etc. The first thing we noticed when we went in was the absolute complete lack of atmosphere – the seating being arranged in such a way made it feel less than welcoming & the acoustics were terrible. I would have left immediately die to the screaming kids, everyone had kids with them, had I not been so hungry. We loitered by a table and single chair in the middle of the room which I imagined to be the greeting point until eventually what turned out to be the only waitress came to seat us. We foolishly took a window seat away from the children in the corner and discovered to our delight that the walls around the French doors were covered in damp. Upon closer inspection we spotted a mushroom growing on the ceiling which added to the charm. The table next to ours had no chairs around it, probably because the air conditioning unit next to it had a rotten & warped wooden casing around it & they were trying to improve the customer experience by not letting anyone sit by it

So, we were seated & passed menus, one new one & one covered in food stains. “Generously Italian” is printed at the top of the menu so what did they do?
The menu is pretty standard for an Italian. Bread, olives, tiger prawns, falafel(???) for starters, pizza, pasta, omelettes, salads & burgers(???)
We opted for Falafel £5 & a basket of bread £2.50, both turned up eventually & at this point it took the opportunity to ask the waitress in hushed tones if she would mind turning up the music “to drown out the screaming kids”, she giggled and winked knowingly at me. 5 minutes later music could be heard roughly the same volume as someones headphones. At this point I had pretty much given up & whenever I got the chance ordered another beer.
Anyway, back to the food. The Falafel were 6 in number, the countess said they were nice, there was certainly more than I expected for a starter but I was sticking to the bread – you know those rolls you get from the supermarket that you warm up? Yes they were! But half of them were grey – olive bread I think. The redeeming feature was the butter which was organic, unsalted and the best thing about the visit so far

Onto the main course, I was salivating at this point after the delights of the starter. I avoided the £13.95 lobster & lime pizza, which was strangely not lobster but tiger prawns & opted for the Sorrento, a collection of meatballs,pepperoni, ham, onion, garlic & chillis with red Leicester & mozzarella. Now the problem I have with mixing your cheese on pizza is that you don’t actually get to taste any of them. This was the case this time, mozzarella was unnoticeable & the red Leicester simply turned the top of the pizza into an orange blob reminiscent of a teenagers face. The pepperoni was bland, garlic unnoticeable, peppers (which I don’t normally manage in pizza express as theyre too hot) very mild. The base was thin and crispy bit a little bit too crispy for my liking as I was able to pick up half the pizza in one hand quite safely – I think the stone baking went a little too far and they left some stone under it for it to have been so rigid. The meatballs were ok but the tomato sauce was far too sweet

The Countess had an omelette which I had a taste of – frazzled rubber. I wont continue

So on to dessert, my favourite part (no, we hadn’t walked out yet we were braving the menu further).
Carrot cake – ok really, but just carrot cake, nothing special for £4
But the winner was vasetto ciocolatta - described as a sheer indulgent chocolate hit - it was a small pot with melted chocolate in it as far as we could tell, with a swirl of cream on the top

Suddenly 3 more members of staff appeared and everyone was trying to serve us – probably because the service charge is already included in the bill. A sheepish looking manager finally came over to us after I had stared at him so we could get the bill

We could hear the couple on the next table being pestered by the waitress to join their 2-4-1 club, they must have been regulars (the fools) as he got a form and started filling it in there and then
If you can stomach the food its actually a very good deal – any main meal, 2nd one free & half price wine mon,tue,wed evenings for £20 for 2 years

Overall

Terrible service, poor food, shoddy décor, not even all organic
