Venezuela - My Latin Lover

Advantages: Great natural beauty
Disadvantages: Pollution from cars

I was rather fortunate this summer that my work took me to Venezuela for the entire month of July and therefore I got to experience so much that this wonderful and fascinating country has to offer. It is an excellent country to travel around in especially if you are on a budget and its location means that you can experience a wide variety of climates, from the jungles of the Amazon, the cloud forests in the north, chilled out Merida at the foot of the Andes before heading off to climb a mountain and then on to the beaches in the north to chill out and enjoy the sea and sand. I was fortunate to do all of these things and so much more with the highlight being the work we did with an indigenous Indian village, a six hour dug out ride from civilisation, being accepted into the community and feeling like you have improved their lives in ...

The Barras is better.....

Advantages: Free, displays good cross-section of Glasgow public, ideal for finding 'Fly-fishing' by J.R. Hartley....
Disadvantages: Can be very busy, Celtic fans on match day, be careful not to be ripped off

...but better than what? The title of this op is the advertising slogan used to promote the Barras (pronounced Bar-as) market which is the largest outdoor/indoor market in Glasgow. The name comes from the Glasgow pronounciation of barrows, which the traders originally used to sell their wares. Nowadays, the stalls are fixed (and the prices aren't, it may be worth a haggle, CH!). Located to the East end of the city, it is open from 9am on Satudays and Sundays and is not to be missed on a weekend visit to Glasgow. It's been a focal point for Glasgow businesses since the 1920's and currently houses 10 markets and over 1000 stalls (ref http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/features/featurefirst1432.html). It's a menagerie of antiques, scrap, 'off-the-back-of-a-lorry' items, auctions, collectors items - basically a posh flea market! It has ...

Review of Barras Market

The best Fanciulla del West

Advantages: Two perfect leads terrific sound and a beautiful orchestra
Disadvantages: none

This recording relights a passion for Puccini, and Italian opera in general, that I have not felt since I was much younger and heard the Callas/de Sabata Tosca for the first time. Like that recording, this recording is the definitive benchmark recording for this opera. Tebaldi and Del Monaco are in their element - one of the great 20th Century couples in full flight; Tebaldi's tone is rounder and more brilliant than any other Minnie while creating a superbly rounded character and Del Monaco is remarkably convincing. This is Del Monaco's finest studio recording even better than his Otello, his voice sounds less nasal than many of his recordings in the 1960s whilst not so heavy and unsmiling as some of his earlier records which altough showing off a remarkable voice have only two apparent dynamics - loud and louder. The sound here is very ...
