During our first day in Barcelona we were lost for where we should be going that night, so whilst touring the city on one of the open top buses we came across Plaça De Catalunya. A few people had mentioned to me that La Rambla was the place where everything seemed to happen in Barcelona and as the Plaça De Catalunya was at the top of La Rambla this seemed like it would be the place to come back to and from that moment on, every time we got a taxi into the centre we headed straight here.
This huge square is probably the pivotal area of the city, with a lot of the through city routes meeting here, along with that you also have the main shopping area in the city but I’ll come to that shortly. The square itself is very reminiscent of Trafalgar Square in London, overrun with Pigeons and a few Statues dotted around the square itself. A selection of Fountains provide the centre piece of the square with plenty of seating around, whether it be on the steps or the benches, which always seemed to be packed out with people just sitting enjoying the world passing by.
The main thing that makes Plaça de Catalunya the perfect place to start your day is just how much actually happens here. One of the Cities main Tourist Information offices can be found on one place and it’s also the meeting place of Barcelona’s, Bus Turistic (Op coming soon), which has one North and one South route meeting here. You also have a metro station and plenty of taxi’s around making it one of the easiest places in the city to get to and leave from. And of course being at the top of La Rambla means you can be at the seafront after a 15 minute walk.
As I mentioned this is one of the main shopping areas in Barcelona with a lot of British high street stores being found around here. Shops like Zara, Habitat and C&A can all be found within about a hundred metres of each other and one of Barcelona‘s biggest department stores is located to the East of the square. Along with that you also have the choice of a lot of fast food restaurants like Mcdonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut and Spain’s own version Pans People. And of course not forgetting the Cafe’s that are spread nicely around here as well, all with seating outside on the street.
One of the main attractions of the square is the mount of Street artists that seem to gather around about this area. From people pretending to be statues to others sitting around playing instruments busking for a little bit of cash. As no one is in any real hurry they gather large crowds as people stop to watch and take a little break from the days sightseeing. Every time we came into the Plaça there literally seemed to be hundreds of people just standing watching some of the strangest things you could ever consider stopping to watch. Like this one guy playing a guitar and a harmonica, whilst he and his dog, sat on a chair next to him were dressed as clowns.
The most amazing thing I found about the Plaça de Catalunya, was how they dealt with the inner City parking issues. The Car Park for this area of town was actually located underground and the majority of it was actually under the Plaça. This really is a simple way of solving parking issues, instead of having large unsightly Multi-storey car parks like we have in this country. Instead the area has some very large skyscrapers, which are the homes to some of the biggest Financial companies in Spain.
The Plaça is very neat and tidy and really a welcoming place as far as the city is concerned. It’s a great place to start your day from with lots of options of what you are able to do from here, whether it be by Bus, Taxi or foot. The only downside is that you have to be constantly vigil of your wallets, as the area is rife for pickpockets making it a bit of an edgy experience when it’s as busy as it is during the day. Apart from that it’s a beautiful part of town that’s really the nerve centre of Barcelona.
...on and enjoy!
Plaça Catalunya is the first port of call for many visitors to Barcelona, as the shuttle trains from "El Prat" international airport (no sniggering please!) stop at the Catalunya metro station serving the square; the shuttle buses also make it a drop-off point. The square is best described as the beating heart of Barcelona, situated slap-bang in the centre of the city, at one end of the mighty La Rambla.
Getting to Plaça Catalunya ... ...found the store uninspiring.
Plaça Catalunya's central location and accessibility mean that it's a prime meeting place for tourist groups. If you're an early bird who prefers to explore the city at the crack of dawn, it's such a convenient spot at which to congregate again later on with your friends. Unfortunately, these facts also attract numbers of dodgy and unsavoury characters to the square. Petty crime is rife and pickpockets are extremely ...

Advantages: The position of the Spanish Square Disadvantages: Can think of none
The Placa de Catalunya is at the top of Le Ramblas, old Barcelona’s main road. It is right in the centre of the city and like the old with the new. When I was there this is ‘the’ place to start of your day of sight seeing. It is the joining point for many attraction filled roads. It has the tourist office there which can come in useful I can tell you as there are so many places you can go from this starting point. Every morning ... ...walked up Le Ramblas to get out our maps and sit down in one of the many outdoor cafés in the sun to decide where we were going. You are sat surrounded in beautiful Gaudi inspired architecture and monuments you feel very in depth with the Spanish culture. There is an unusual monument whish is a large piece of stone with some stone steps placed on top upside down which creates such an image in such a green square. There are loads of trees and is almost ...

Advantages: It's not Liverpool. It has shops and restaurants and what not. Disadvantages: It's not Manchester. It only has some shops and restaurants and what not.
took a taxi at a cost of about £13. Other alternatives are to take the train (every 30 minutes from Clot-Arago, Arc de Triomf, PlacaCatalunya and Barcelona Sants stations) for about £3 or the bus from outside the Corte Ingles department store for £1.50. These both run from 6am to midnight 6 days a week, and during more limited times on Sundays. No matter how you travel, the trip never takes more than half an hour. If you end up at the wrong terminal, there are also regular shuttle busses to the other 2.
** Good Points **
The airport was incredibly easy to navigate, and the whole place was spotlessly clean and shiny. There were lots of staff on hand to answer questions and they seemed nice and friendly – even pointing out to the homeless people hanging around where they could fill up their water bottles (in England one look ...
You've come to the wrong place for a punch-by-punch analysis of Ali vs. Foreman, but La Rambla is just as, if not more, entertaining!
The central promenade of Barcelona, a mile in length, stretches from PlaçaCatalunya to the port. The magnificent street is chiefly the domain of pedestrians, as the two lanes of crawling traffic and frustrated drivers amply show. A relaxed stroll down the tree-lined walkway is an essential part of any visit to the Catalan city. Locals enjoy regular evening constitutionals here on warm nights; during the tourist seasons, you'll be in the company of thousands of fellow visitors.
La Rambla's central location means that accommodation in the area is incredibly convenient but not cheap. Hotels like the "Rivoli Ramblas" on La Rambla itself are naturally costlier (and noisier!) than those hidden away in ...
Advantages: Smart and classy, close to city centre, friendly staff Disadvantages: Decor may be too trendy for traditionalists!
Writing this review here in wet and windy Wales, it seems hard to believe that barely 2 weeks ago my wife and I were enjoying the sun of Barcelona. Its a wonderful city and our weekend there went far too quickly - in fact I think we spent more time picking a hotel than we did in Catalonia itself!
As I mentioned on a previous hotel review, choosing a hotel in a major city centre can be something of a lottery and can make or break a holiday. You need to be near the amentities, but not above a nightclub which closes at 5 am. It helps to be near train and bus links, but not overlooking a station! By the time we'd finally chosen the Pulitzer Hotel, I felt I had a PhD in Barcelona and had seen more city centre maps than its mayor!
The Pulitzer has a great location, just off PlacaCatalunya which is Barcelona's main square. Its been ...
