Place Messena is only a short walk from the bus station, (follow the park towards the sea), and from the railway station turning left walk for only a couple of minutes you reach walk down Avenue Jean Medicin (away from the bridge/fly-over & the brilliantly named Maison du Pantalons!). The bus from the airport goes past the Place Messena before reaching the bus station on the fountain side. The Tourist Information office is only about 5 minutes walk away along the sea front, (away from the old town/hill).
Place Messen has been largely pedestrianised and will have trams running through it, (when they're finished). On my first visit it was busy with cars and traffic - very unfriendly for wandering tourists. Now it is open, paved and the atmosphere is much more relaxed and less frenetic. Behind the arches, at ground level, many of the small shops stay open into the evening.
The view is open to a large fountain as are those of the greenery of Jardin Albert 1st and Espace Messena. It provides ready access to Rue Massena (restaurants & shops), Avenue Jean Medecin (shops), Avenue de Verdum (posh shops), the Old town and the Promenade Des Anglais. The large Galerie Lafayette department store is on one corner.
At the end of the Av Jean Medicin the Place Messena is entered between two memorials to a pair of Resistance fighters hung during WWII.
Place Messena seems to be a place to see and be seen, shop, buy an ice cream and in the evenings watch the occasional busker.
Advantages: fantastic journey near the beach Disadvantages: none
place of Nice is "PlaceMasséna".
>> The most tourist street is "Vieux-Nice" and "Promenade des Anglais".
