Advantages: Nice climate, good people, nice food, good beaches, safe, plenty to see Disadvantages: Touristy in places
of the Caribbean, the best beaches seem very clean, some of the sand being very soft and fine. The water is clean, free from weed, although rocky in places. Some places charge for sunbeds and umbrellas, but you'll also find beach restaurants which don't. Beach sellers are not common, we only saw one chap selling donuts the whole week. To the west of Chania, the areas of Stalos, Marina, Agios and Platanias form a long stretch of beach to accommodate the tourist. I'm sure these are extremely busy in the peak of summer, however in May, they were all very little used - and it was never a problem finding a nice spot.

Advantages: Mesmerisingly beautiful beaches, awe-inspiring mountains, friendly people, great fruit and veg produce. Disadvantages: Cannot flush toilet paper down the toilet due to their old plumbing system. You get used to it.
for excursion deals. The first excursion I went on was with JMC, the people I booked the holiday with. I didn’t realise that I could have gotten the same deal for at least £15 cheaper with the numerous other local tour operators down the road. They are just as good so don’t be afraid to shop around for a better deal.
- the more excursions you plan to go on, the more money you will need.
- There’s a multitude of beautiful, artistic wooden carvings and ceramics on sale out there. If you’re into things like that, you won’t be disappointed, but walk with more money.
- Go to Platanias even if it’s just for the market. It has a personality of its own. You can buy anything from age-old cheese to age-old leather!! There are two war fortresses for those who it interests. There are also plenty of fish restaurants ...
