We visited the Dominican Republic in June 2003. We had booked the holiday on teletext and got an all inclusive package for less than £700 for a fortnight, which we thought was very reasonable to say it was high season for going on holiday.
We arrived at the airport puerto plata and found that the heat was very intense. We were dying to get on the airconditioned coach because it was so hot and we weren't used to it. We arrived at the Hotel (villas Doradas) which was beautiful. the rooms were basic but comfortable and clean, and let's face it who spends a lot of time in their room on holiday. There were two large pools at the hotel one of which had a bar in it which was great because you could be cool whilst having a drink. (watch out for the underage kids trying to get drinks cos they hide their all inclusive bands under the water so the waiter can't see, just a warning for all the parents out there with teenagers). By the pool is a spray tan thing. It's a machine which applies suncream to you and it's totally waterproof and you only apply it once a day. You'll know if your a good looking female because the very tanned man who does it will give it to you for free (if you have it done topless!). The hotel is right on the beach so you've not far to go for the water sports. non motorised are free!
The entertainment staff were fantastic. They were so much fun! They play games all day with the kids and the adults as well. They look like stupid games when you are watching but have a go you'll really like it! At night they put on shows at the stage area. They are ok! again silly games sometimes but they can get a bit boring after a while. Theres plenty to do outside of the hotel. Just around the corner there is loads of bars, pizzahut and shops with souvenirs. Theres also a good designer clothes shop which is really really cheap!
Food was great with a lot of choice. At the main restaurants they have a different theme every night, but there is also an a la carte restaurant and a chinese which you can go to both once in your stay.
Overall we had a fantastic time and would recommend this hotel and area to anyone wanting to go to the Dominican Republic. Also if you've got chance go on the Paradise Island trip it's great. A word of warning don't go with the guys on the beach it's not good although it's a bit cheaper.

Advantages: Beautiful place - Ideal for couples and families - very friendly place Disadvantages: Very quiet nightlife - not much to do in the evenings and evening entertainment not up to much
Advantages: Fantastic Surroundings, Lovely Hotel, Great Excursions to Take, Friendly Staff, VIP Treatment Disadvantages: You won't want to come home and going to Spain will seem poor in comparison
