If you want an amazing family fun-filled holiday then this is the place to go. Myself, my husband and two children went there in August of last year. The journey from the Airport was around an 1 1/2 hours, but it was scenic and not to much of a strain. On arrival, the booking in was quick and straightforward and they were very welcoming to us, giving us maps of the CorfuPlaza, welcome packs and other literature to explain the whole scenario to us. The entrance itself was very large and very grand, comprising of a large seating area, a large bar, telephones and information points, and a great deal of brouchures on the resort itself and outings we could take whilst there.
Everything Thomsons had stated in their brochure was spot on with a few hidden extras on arrival.
On entering our one-bedroom apartment we were amazed at how spacious it was, the bedroom itself was extremely large housing two beds, large wardrobes, chest of draws, and side cabinets more than enough storage space for our two-week stay. The bathroom hosted a bath and shower, bidet and sink and again was extremely large. The main lounge and mine and my husbands bedroom for two weeks again was extremely large, comprising of the kitchen, table and four chairs, television, settee (our bed) and another armchair style seat. Our balcony was huge with table
and chairs provided to sit out on. The apartment itself was fully air-conditioned which was lovely in August. Although dubious of what out settee/bed would be like, to my amazement it was lovely and comfortable and I could'nt have been happier if I had been in a proper double bed, so accomodation was up to and aboe my expectations and I was truly pleased with every part of it.
The complex itself was set in huge grounds consisting of blocks of apartments seperated by ornamental waterfalls, beautiful flowers and trees. The swimming pool itself was set near the front of the hotel, and had a bar and restaurant located right by it's side. The bar was reasonably priced for a pool bar and had various happy hours going on at different times. The stage was also situated close to this where activities occured for most of the day either on the stage or in the pool, keeping everyone entertained at all times. As well as Volleyball comps in the pool, there were quizzes going on, entertainment for the kiddies and a great deal more. There was also a games room by the pool where the children could go to play table tennis, pool and various other table games. There was also a book lending service here where you could go and swap paperbacks to read once you had finished your own, you just took yours and swapped it for another which I found a brill idea.
During the day there were three different kids clubs going on, where the kiddies went off with the Thomsons Reps for 1 1/2 hours at a time which gives mums and dads a break and also the kiddies a chance to mix and make friends. There were also special Kids Clubs rooms where the kiddies could go make things, play games etc, but you had to put their names on a list the day before to ensure there were spaces for them, but during our two weeks, our two never missed out. Also they would run special evenings for the children based around themes like halloween, harry potter etc, the children would take a dink and snack and watch films or have parties, these were for 2 hours, giving mum and dad a chance to go have a meal alone, to do this you did have to tell them what restaurant or place you would be in case of an emergency, so well controlled. In this main area there was also a large soft play area for the toddlers to go to play obviously though with their parents supervising. There is also a very well-equipped children's playground, a creche and baby's paddling pool, so all round entertainment and facilities for children.
Around the pool area there are also very adequate toilet facilities.
Also on the complex was a very competitive supermarket, not at all more expensive than any of the town supermarkets.
The complex itself is twinned with another hotel with is full board only and not a thomsons hotel but it shares the grounds, although they are not allowed to use the facilites of the Corfu Plaza, as you walk past this hotel on the grounds you approach the beach, before reaching this, there is yet another bar, and also an amphitheatre style arena where again there is more entertainment.
The beach itself winds the length of St George South and although is not extremely wide is clean, very sandy and the sea and views spectacular. Along the beach itself are restaurants and bars strewn along, with each and everyone of them allowing you to the toilet facilities which most of us would appreciate. The town runs alongside the beach and has lots of bars, restaurants, tavernas, many shops and supermarkets and to my amazement a Cash Machine you can use. What I liked about the resort was there were no disco's, no rowdy groups of youngsters (not that I disagree with it, I used to be one of them myself along time ago) but it is nice that you can walk along with your children and not worry about anything like that. There are many side stalls where you can have your childrens hair braided, or henna tatoos among other things. About half way up the road there is a small funfair sight for the children which again was very reasonable.
The people of this town were nothing but warm and friendly and treated you like long lost friends no matter which place you went too and by the end of the holiday we had built many friendships with the owners of these places. I could thoroughly recomment the Blue Sea Restaurant which is run by an english lady and her Greek husband, lovely food and also a playground for the children to play in while you have a drink. There is also a Taverna which advertise their greek nights all over town, it is a ten minute stroll away from the resort but it cost around £25 for the four of us, this included all our meals, drinks and entertainment. We joined up with a few other families and had a wonderful night, although our husbands were a little late rising the following day after one two many jugs of ouzo (in with the price) dawning dark sunglasses for the rest of the day.
Whilst on our Holiday we went on several trips with Thomsons and found them total value for money, excellent venues and entertainment from the Thomson Reps. The Captains Cruise had to be the highlight of the holiday, with water fights on board for the kids, games etc, then stopping at a lovely bay for a barbecue and loads of free booze, again the reps take the children up the far end of the beach and play games with them in their clubs. You had the opportunity of diving off the ship when they took you to another bay which is deserted but the water is the bluest you have ever seen. With songs, games and pranks all day long it is great family entertainment and there is not one yawn in sight, its a trip you don't want to end, brill.
St George South is the best Greek resort I have been too, and I have been to many in my life. Its is a beautiful place, friendly could not fault a single thing. Thomsons provided us with a fun-filled family holiday, prevented our children from becoming bored and also giving us the occasional hour to ourself. The apartments were outstanding and I would recommend this to everyone. Being on a totally flat complex, and the resort itself being totally flat and not at all hilly, this would also suit those less mobile than others or wheelchair users.
The cost of this holiday for two weeks in a One-Bedroomed Apartment (Self Catering) was £1,389. May sound a little on the expensive side but worth every single penny for two weeks of total relaxation and enjoyment. Well done Thomsons for providing a brilliant hotel in a brilliant place.
