Plovdiv - brimming with history

Advantages: Beautiful Old Town, lots of history, the ice cream
Disadvantages: Limited for people with mobility problems, poor service at times

...such a place. In 432 Plovdiv was conquered by Philip of Macedonia and under the Roman Empire it was the capital of Thrace. The legacy of the Romans alone would make Plovdiv stick out as a place of great significance but it doesn't stop there. Old Plovdiv is essentially an open-air museum with over 150 examples of Bulgarian architecture, much of it from the National Revival period. It is especially cheering to hear that the Old Town of Plovdiv is ...
...article gave the impression of Plovdiv as a den of iniquity, a place stricken by HIV and hepatitis, a place full of bandits and child sellers; even a place where corruption runs through society at all levels. While I can safely say that nobody tried to sell me a baby, I could see that Plovdiv is not a city without problems; however, I would say that these problems remain problems for the citizens of Plovdiv themselves and shouldn't spoil a visit ... more

"Ancient and Eternal"

Advantages: Fun, cheap, beautiful....
Disadvantages: none

...present you the city of Plovdiv and to prove you that it is worth making a vacation there. The city of Plovdiv... One of the cities I will never forget wherever I am. The History ~~~~~~~~~~~ The city was founded somewhere before 6000-8000 years ago. It has had many names throughout the centuries - Kendros, Eumolpia, Philippopolis, Pulpudeva, Trimontzium (coming from Tremonteum - meaning Three Hills), Pulden, Populdin, Ploudin, Filibe and nowadays ...
...15th century. As you see, Plovdiv is a city even older than Rome, which is called "The eternal city". At the beginning the city was situated on three hills and after it exapanded, it stretched over seven hills. These hills were called Taxim, Nebet, Dzhambaz, Sahat, Dzhendem, Bunardzhik and Markovo Tepe. Nowadays, the last one, composed only of rare granite, no longer exists as it has been turned into pavement-stones for the streets of the city. During ...

One of the oldest town in the world

Advantages: Very nice and peacful town
Disadvantages: Infrastrocture

Plovdiv is one of the oldest town in the world no one know how old is it ,many scientists are maiking researchs but they cant find the wright answer ,Plovdiv have very interesting hills whitch they call them "Tepeta" in the distant past Plovdiv was situated on seven hills: Taxim, Nebet, Jambaz, Sahat, Jendem and Bunarjik. The seventh hill, Markovo Tepe, has nowadays subsided completely under the pavement of modern Plovdiv , they are spread all over ...
...enrich each other to make Plovdiv a synonym of Bulgarian history and a genuine world city. Plovdiv is very, very old. The Eternal City, as Rome is conventionally called, is much younger. Athens, Carthage and Constantinople came into being later. A contemporary of Troy and having survived Mycenae, Plovdiv is a city upon layers of cities and an epoch upon layers of epochs. Plovdiv is all in one: a Thracian and classical Greek polis, the pride of Philip ...

Good place to improve your health and relax with the family

Advantages: SPA, swimming pools, historical sights of the village
Disadvantages: very hot in the summer

The small village Hissar is in Bulgaria near a very famous city Plovdiv. Please don't think that Augusta SPA Hotel is in Plovdiv. It is in the small and very interesting historical city Hissar which 55 km far from Plovdiv. You may arrive in Sofia by irplane and go in Hissar by bus. Hissar is 174.64 far from the capital Sofia. Hissar city is located in the central part of the country under the southern slopes of the Central forest at 360 m above sea level (see wikipedia) We visit SPA Hotel Augusta at least twice a year - we like it very much. The best seasons to visit this region are the autumn and the spring. In the summer it is really very hot. Hissar is an ancient town and its treasure is the mineral water. There are a lot of SPA Hotels and Augusta is one of the biggest. The hotel has two parts. The first one is ...

Lux and relax

Advantages: luxury hotel, good service, swiming pool
Disadvantages: the hotel is far from the slopes and the rest of the resort

Hotel Belmont is in Pamporovo ski resort, Bulgaria. Pamporovo is a ski resort in the heart of the Rhodopi Mountain, 260 km from the capital Sofia, 85 km south of Plovdiv and 15 km from Smolyan. The resort altitude is 1 650 m, with its highest peak being Snezhanka ? 1 926 m. I was in Hotel Belmont in the winter of 2008. The Christmas event for our company took place there and that was my chance to see the Hotel. Hotel Belmont is really very luxury.... and expensive. You must be ready that everything is expensive there - even the ordinary tea. It is luxury but cozy at the same time. You feel well and you may relax and enjoy your ski vacation. There is a nice swimming pool in the Hotel. The water in the swimming pool is warm and this is the best relax after the ski. You may continue with your physical activity in the Fitness ...

Thomsonfly

Advantages: No delays & On time
Disadvantages: In-flight meal

I travelled with thomsonfly.com on the 17th Feb 2007 from Doncaster/Sheffield to Plovdiv,Bulgaria and returning again on the 24th. The flight was on time which was a great advantage. I would like to express my views on the meal service. I think it is rip-off and very bad quality. For the £7 i paid each you got a hot meal (okay), a small bread bun and water ! I mean come on...that most only be the cost of £1 ! We also got the exact same meal on our return journey. What happened to the good/reasonable meals you got 3/4 years ago. Everything has gone 'down the pan'. Apart from the meal the flight was okay i suppose. However, there was no in-flight entertainment for the kids. If I had the choice of flying with another aircraft I proberbly would. ...
