Plymouth seems to live simply by taking up all the failed planning applications turfed out by Exeter City Council.
A case in point is the Warner Village Cinema. Originally planned for Exeter, the city council decided not to grant permission for the project to start and so Plymouth welcomed it with open arms! Obviously a good decision, but to be honest, I would much rather have the cinema in Exeter, which is cleaner, much more pleasant (and obviously closer to home!)
There is no denying that Plymouth is a very historic place to visit and for stuff like the Plymouth Dome (much better than the Millennium version), the city museum and other attractions showing off the maritime heritage of Plymouth make it worthwhile. However, actually being in Plymouth is a different matter. The last time I was in Plymouth, walking to a great little Indian Restaurant, we were worried for our lives as the gunshots went off around us...the residents didn't blink an eye, which means it must be a regular occurance. Union Street is another to avoid...notorious for the prostitutes and their sailors as well as some of the roughest club encounters you are likely to find. I know of one guy who managed to upset the wrong person, who promptly took him outside and dropped a concrete paving slab on his head.
For daytime shopping and tourist-type visiting, Plymouth is worth a look, but don't hang around in the evening, I implore you!
