Zakopane - a hidden Alpine jewel
Advantages: beautiful, unspoilt and very good value for money Disadvantages: language barrier and food could be better
...scenic.
Zakopane, the town...
Zakopane is wedged between Gubalova hill in the north and the Tatra mountains to the south. There is one main street that runs through Zakopane which has been named as Polands most famous street and I have never before seen anything like it. About a kilometre in length spanning from north to south and completely pedestrianised, there must have been at least 20 street performers every evening, the same number of people ... ...Local things to do...
Zakopane borders the Polish national park. A 5-10 minute walk brings you to the park, where you have to pay a small fee to enter the park. Using walking maps locally available, plan your own walks down the valleys. Valleys that are not within walking distance of Zakopane can be accessed by minibus.
The minibus station is a godsend. Although it may be intimidating getting onto a private minibus with a driver who speaks limited ...

Auschwitz, Cold, Hard, and Evil within a fence.
Advantages: Excellent Museum with modern facilities Disadvantages: A very hard place to visit
Auschwitz Review, by GT5952
I visited Auschwitz on several occasions related not only to work, but also for personal reasons. My first visit was as a young soldier, with the off chance of being within a Land Rovers drive from the site, subsequent visits were made in relation to the early days of work, and its from this, where the information from the review is gathered.
My last visit was made with my eldest son, and it was indeed a moving experience, ... ...it, and its memorials like Auschwitz that should be preserved to never allow us to forget, and more importantly, never allow it to happen again, however, similar event have, and do occur globally.

Zakopane in the Polish Tatras
Advantages: Cheap, undeveloped, beautiful Disadvantages: Getting there and back, language difficulties
...a small picturesque town in the very South of Poland and nestling in a valley of the Tatra mountain range. I have just returned from a long weekend there with my girlfriend and would like to tell you a little bit about this beautiful, interesting and undeveloped area.
The Tatra mountain range extends across Southern Poland and Northern Slovakia and is a fairly serious bunch of rocks. The peaks vary in height from small green rolling foothills all ... ...2000 meters. The town of Zakopane has basically modelled itself as a ski resort but perhaps not in the way people used to France, Switzerland and Austria would expect. The clients here are almost all from Eastern Europe, probably due to the inaccessibility of the area from Western Europe. I drove there from Prague in the Czech Republic and it took 8 hours. However, two thirds of the distance (Czech roads) took only 3 hours. Polish roads are abysmal!! ...

I need another holiday!
Advantages: cheap, friendly people Disadvantages: bad connections (so far)
I just came back from a holiday in Poland and thought I share this with you lot.
Because it's not very easy to fly to Poland for a reasonable price (prices from Birmingham were something ridicules like £400) , I booked a ticket with Centralwings from Gatwick, even though I live in the Midlands. I had the choice of flying to Krakow or Warszawa (the capital). The flight was around £60 return, which is great. Having this choice I decided to fly in ... ...cities) which was a very good choice. The flight was at 10 am, and you really want to be there 2 hours beforehand, so it was a very early morning…
We arrived in Krakow around 12 am on a Sunday, and took a taxi to our "Polonia Crakow" hotel, which was quite nice and more importantly very close to the centre. The centre and most of the town still have very old buildings, but they are nicely looked after, so there is loads to see and visit. The old ...

Crushed by the Wheels of Industry
Advantages: Appeals to my bizarre taste, fascinating history Disadvantages: A depressed area, few "activities"
...sitting in the shadows? Does Katowice have anything more to offer visitors?
Easyjet now boldly proclaims that its destinations are airports and not "airfields" - it has to be said that some of the other budget destinations do fly to airports some considerable distance from the city they claim to serve. Katowice is one of Easyjet's newest destinations and one which they remind potential customers is close to the historic Polish city of Krakow. In ... ...the city at Pyrzowice. Does Katowice have anything of its own to offer visitors or is it simply a gateway to more attractive destinations?
We visited Katowice during an extended tour of eastern Europe by train and the city presented itself as a useful stopping point between Krakow and Prague, the final stage of our trip. We broke the journey with a visit to Auschwitz some thirty kilometres from Katowice and finally arrived in the city late in the ...
