We visited Pafos in late May, hired a 4 wheel drive [ an absolute necessity] and went off exploring the beautiful west of Cyprus. Armed with a map [buy one before you get to Cyprus] we were determined to see Cyprus as it was, and should remain, avoiding the tourist areas as much as possible. We drove along the 'white' roads towards the Akamas Peninsula, as it was early in the year there were few other travellers which allowed us to stop and admire the breathtakingly beautiful countryside and rugged scenery. Lara Beach was practically deserted and the pleasure of wading in the crystal clear waters was a blissful antidote to the rising temperature. We stopped at the little cafe/bistro and sipped iced drinks, whilst a small handful of explorers ate the very generous portions of Cypriot cuisine served by the friendly waiters. Onwards and upwards, the Gorge itself was calling. This is when you truly benefit from jeep hire, the roads at either side of the Akamas Gorge are not for the fainthearted or casual driver! There were several jaw dropping, awfully close to the edge of the road moments, but the sheer magnificence of the views makes it so worthwhile. [Not to mention the adrenalin rush for the driver and passengers!] In fact we enjoyed it so much, we returned the next day and drove up and down again! We walked the white roads, watched the countless goats and lizards, met several donkeys, and saw very few fellow travellers. Moving slightly inland, we drove through typical Cypriot villages, still very much alive with tradition. Black clad grandmothers waved as we passed, children determined to try out their English called to us, we shared wine with locals and ate bread and olives. Cyprus is a fantastic place, full of friendly, hospitable people, who remain proud of their culture and heritage, but the areas between Pafos and Polis are truly beautiful, and we consider ourselves very fortunate that we have shared them.

I'm off to Paphos in September so that was a nice insight to the nearby area. Lexy

Nice review, this brought back memories of when we stopped in Latchi just down the road from Polis. 2 weeks of bliss. Thanks for reminding me how nice it was.

Advantages: A beautiful place for relaxing, great views, great food and cheap drinks! The people in Polis are very pleasant and helpful; they treat you like family once you get to know them. Disadvantages: Not a lot of nightclub's for those who want to go clubbing. You need to hire a car to travel to most areas as buses are never on time.
