Polperro in Southern Cornwall is awesome. It is stunningly picturesque and ranks in my book as one of the loveliest fishing villages in England and that is saying a lot because there are some gems in Cornwall and Yorkshire. It has a working fishing fleet, now that is something of a rarity in Modern Britain, a wonderful harbour and pedestrian friendly streets.
If you want to stay for a few days there are cottages to rent as well as a plethora of very homely bed and breakfasrt establishments. Despite being immensely popular with visitrs, the local Cornish landladies dont sting you. Rates are very reasonable, the food good and most landladies are a veritable mine of information about Polperro and other delightful places such as Looe.
You wont go hungry in Polperro. There are several good restaurants and you will not be too surprised to learn that succulent seafood dishes feature prominently. Polperro is far from dull and there are half a dozen or so pubs, three of the best being Blue Peter, The Noughts and my favourite, the Three Pilchards. The latter's clientele seems to encompass weather hardened local fishermen and a fair sprinkling of visitors.
There is a Museum in town and this is also good walking country. If you are energetic enough you can always walk the coastal path to the lovely twin villages of East and West Looe.
Polperro is not only stunningly beautiful but it is also a workaday sort of place. After all in December there are not too many tourists so the economic livelihood of the locals has to depend heavily on Mother Nature and the bounty from the sea.
I wholeheartedly recommend Polperro as a must see place should you visit Cornwall. It is so picturesque, vibrant, but not touristy to extreme.
This lovely op brought back happy memories for me - thank you!

It's a beautiful little village, hubby and I found ourselves being drawn back there again and again on our last trip to Cornwall. We especially loved the horse drawn trams that would ferry you up and down the hill if you were feeling too lazy to walk!
