The only mistake I made with this trip was not booking at least a full day. Being short on time I did a joint trip to Pompeii and Mt.Vesuvius (which I would recommend doing, but seperately). I didn't even see half of it.
There is just so much to take in. There was not one thing that failed to amaze me. As soon as you enter, the stories begin; the pavements, the coach grooves and that's just the entrance road. There are houses, shops, baths, courtyards along with all the amenities we have today. It really is like stepping back in time. What I found most amazing were the casts of those who perished in the disaster- it really hits home as to what happened in that very place all that time ago. As many times as you have seen it on television, you haven't seen it untill you've been there- there's just such an amazing feeling.
There is no doubt about it, you need a guide. The downside to that is that you have to share them with fifteen other people, but otherwise you would miss so many of the small details, which make it such an amazing experience. If you are anywhere near Pompeii on your travells it really is a must see. A good idea would be to obtain a plan beforehand and decide what you would like to see during your visit. With a bulk of the area being fairly similar (houses, shops etc.) you can visit the main areas, for example the stadium, and still not miss out on the rest of the city. But don't wander- you will get lost easily!
I've always wanted to visit Pompeii and only had a short stay in Italy so I was so glad that I wasn't let down- it truly was a wonderful experience and if I have the chance I will return to see what I missed.
