Have you ever awoken from a particularly bad nightmare and felt a wash of relief when you are able to tell yourself 'It was only a dream?' Now answer me this- have you ever awoken from a particularly bad nightmare and realized that could stil well be in one? Welcome to Pontins!

Pontins is a well known and apparently 'award winning' holiday centre in the tradition of Butlins and British Holidays/Haven. There are many parks, situated in mostly coastal or countryside resorts in the UK (Including England and Wales)

Since William Butlin opened the first Butlins resort (which I must add still stands today as one of the three remaining camps in Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire) interest within the British holiday industry has soared. Instead of shelling out thousands to jet off to unaffordable destinations abroad, Joe Public in Old Blighty could now himself have a good knees up in one of Butlins fabulously camp but admittedly impressive holiday resorts without having to worry too much about the grumble of sky-high prices and jetlag. For many years people flocked to these camps to have some typical British holiday fun with the family, and thus it was really only a matter of time before the industry expanded and new operations cashed in on the hype. The very fact that Butlins took off on a near vertical tangent meant that other UK companies began to jump on the British holiday bandwagon. One such company is Pontins. Now, it must be said- the success of Pontins is one which cannot be denied. In almost every well-known coastal location across the UK there is a Pontins resort not too far away.
The park also took over Haven's idea of installing its parks in countryside laden areas, expanding to an even greater extent and appealing to older more mature holidaymakers. Later on the company would begin to cater for groups outside of the 'family' band it is famous for, including themed weekends for the golden oldies and of course stag and hen weekends for those fun loving friends. The parks even host all gay/lsbian parties, somehing which is more than can be said for Butlins. And not to mention that Pontins has a huge number of parks considering it is a privatley funded copmpany. But the fact of the matter is, no matter how many resorts the company can now boast about, Pontins is exceedingly popular amongst British holidaymakers and families as a whole. Unfortunately this means the majority of mainstream families taken in by the fancy advertising are in for a rude awakening once they have handed their hard earned cash over and checked in.

Anyways now I have bored you with the history of the British holiday I will move onto my actual opinions of the actual Pontins resort we were subject to (and I can guarantee many people agree with me when I say it aint pretty.) The first (and last) time we stayed at Pontins was in 2007 in the Southport resort. Southport is a rapidly decreasing seaside town situated in Merseyside. With the death of both the famous Pleasureland Amusement Park and the Sefton owned Zoo there really isn't much to offer here if you have young children. The beach however is marvelous and if you like amusement arcades then you will certainly find something to do here. Luckily, Blackpool is only half an hour up the coast, but there is also a Pontins resort there so it would seem pointless going to Southport's Pontins hovel if you are intending to spend time in Blackpool. Anyways, the resort is easy to find once you have left Marine drive and the Southport town centre, but finding a place to park once you are on the resort is much more difficult than it need be. The chances are you will end up parking a good walk away from your actual apartment (and I use that word loosely seeing as how the accommodation is excruciatingly appalling- but more on that later) meaning that if you have a large family getting all the bits and bobs into the apartment might be quite an ordeal. This is only the start to your abysmal holiday however as you must now check in properly and collect your keys from the reception area. Once you have left the comfort of your car you are left to your own devices to shuffle around the resort in search of the key collection point which is situated in the main building in the centre of the resort. This shouldn't be too hard to find as there will be a large number of other families fumbling around getting ready to collect their own keys, but bear in mind that there are always cars speeding through the car parking areas which are grassy, and there is always the likelihood that your little darlings will run off.

There is some things you MUST know about checking in
Firstly- if you have arrived at the park before a certain time (which is absurdley quite late in the afternoon) then you are not permitted to check into your appartment and must therefore wait until the time comes by. (This doesn't apply to club accomodation guests as they are allowed to check in much earlier.)
Secondly with so many people rushing to get their keys at the same time expect to be stood around for a long time or waiting in a fairly unoragnized queue before you actually get any where with checking in. The staff will also insist that you queue up according to your surname, which gives a feeling of being back at school where one must queue orderly by his or her name. (Whether this is done to help the staff or to intimidate the guest further is anyones guess.)
Thirdly- don't expect the staff on the collection point (or anywhere else in the resort for that mater) to be helpful in anyway should you have a problem. The usual routine is 'shrug your shoulders and pretend you don't have a clue what the customer is talking about' so you are better off leaving them to their business.

Anyways, on collection of your keys you will be given a park guide and map, telling you of the events that will be taking place and of course where everything is. Unfortunatley (I seem to be using that word a lot) the map makes little sense and finding your way around is better done by coordination or of memorizing routes around the park, however much of the accomodation looks the same so you might have a job eitherway. The map looks like it was made by a pre-schooler handed a pack of crayons and will be no help to you at all. The orienteering advertised in the 'whats on' guide is actually finding the correct apartment, so tick it off your list as soon as you arrive.

By now you will probably be in a completely down trodden mood. But if you think shoddy check in services were the lowlight of your holiday then prepare for the shock of your life when you come to actually viewing your apartment. Pontins have saved the stinking rotten finale of your holiday for when you arrive at the 'apartment.' It doesn't matter if you have gone for standard or club, they are simply- and I use this expression with great anger- disgusting. The smell of the apartments is something not even I myself (a human being) can find words to describe. It is so hard hitting you will probably hover by the door for a while wondering if- glory be to God you actually want to venture in further. If you do hold your breath and are brave enough to step inside, then you should be awarded an honoury Pontins medal. In some cases (this was our case) your apartment wont have even been cleaned and will be standing as it did before the last bunch of people checked out! The walls were dirty, the crockery and cutlery was unwashed, the bathrooms were filthy and ant-infested (as was the kitchen and the fridge) the bed linen smelt of urine and sweat and the carpets were dusty and had not been vacuumed. The windows were grimy the curtains smelt of dirt and don't get me started in the state of the sink. The beds were uncomfortable, the sofa bed was ridiculously small and broken (?! ) and the walls were paper thin as to the point where you can make out the exact conversation of your neighbors. Oh and not forgetting the mould growing everywhere. Now, of course we wern't going to stand for this and after picking our chins up off the floor we got out map and trekked back to check in to demand to be moved. After recieving some blank 'we re used to this sort of complaint' stares from the staff we were moved into a 'clean' apartment. Well when I say 'clean' I mean it was bearable. The linen was cleaner (the windows were still horrible however and the walls were still paper thin.) The beds were also very uncomfortable and the views out of the apartment were equally hideous (imagine a 1950's prison camp.)

So after a disastrous and exhausting start (after a considerable amount of time driving) it was time to try to find something to cheer up with. sadly, Pontins also fails miserably in providing anything remotely close to what could be regarded as 'family entertainment.' When the staff at Pontins turn around to you and say 'You should have gone to Butlins' you kind of get the idea of how bad the place is. By now it was about seven in the evening and according to the guide we had been given there was a family show in the main entertainment complex. It was a show alright! Badly rehearsed singers belting out appalling renditions of classic songs then dishing it out as a 'tribute act' followed by a shoddy gameshow which would be more suited at a hen party (great for children?)
We soon left the complex and decided to go to the family bar which was a small improvement entertainment wise. After a couple of overly priced drinks we decided to call it a night (at nine pm!) and head back to the pit/hovel/hell hole.
After a very uncomfortable night and a cold shower in the morning (the heating is non existence and if you want hot water then you are bluffing) we went off to see if the park could redeem itself in any way. But no such luck. We had already been told by our neighbors not to bother with the pool (which was cold and crowded apparently) so we gave that miss. There were no shows on during the day and the resort seemed dead considering the number of families who had turned up the day before (I am guessing many had already left). The park and the adventure course looked uninteresting and the play areas for kids were uncared for and shabby. Instead we decided to get in the car and head off to the beach and into Southport. After a considerably good day we decided that Pontins was an awful awful place and in the morning we would be leaving (two days early.)

And we did.

And what more can I say? Pontins is awful in every respect. The only good thing are the locations (and don't think I am giving the company praise because if anything the tacky Pontins parks give the areas a bad name!) but other than that this place is just awful. Checking in becomes a chore, staying in the apartments is like doing time in Alcatraz and the whole resort is dull and boring. And on top of that they charge sky-high prices in peak time for what is really a waste of land. Fortunatley (I used the alternative word!) Pontins were happy to fully refund us as we had threatened to give the Health services a call. This however does not justify What a horrible, miserable place this is. Places like Butlins are fun, clean and despite the tacky branding are actually quite classy. Pontins on the other hand is an embarrassment to the UK and totally and completely stinks.
