Are you at that point when you know you need to go on holiday, but you want to go somewhere new, which doesn't cost the earth?
Well Porec, in north western Croatia is the ideal place for you!
Croatia is suffering at the moment, not because of any wars or unrest, but because everybody thinks there is unrest there. But Porec has not been in a war since WW2, so there is nothing to worry about there!
The placement of Porec is ideal. It is on the coast of a very beautiful country, but close enough to Slovenia and Venice for day trips.
We stayed in a hotel which was on it's own island! with a regular ferry service to the mainland, this was not a problem.
The national food is great, every Brit will have no problem with it because it is very similar to our own food with meat dishes and pasta based dishes.
The town on the mainland is small, but nice, and home made icecream is a speciality. If you like to be entertained, there is one icecream shop which you must visit - and don't be afraid of not being able to find it - they will find you! A speciality of this icecream shop is not just it's fine icecream, but the tricks and jokes that the shop assistants play! One member of staff will stand at one end of the court yard, the other will stand outside the shop - about 10 metres away. The one by the shop throughs a ball of icecream through the air and the member of staff on the other side of the court yard catches it.... in his mouth! You will be entertained here, but it isn't the only reason to go to Porec.
If I was to write all the reasons for going to Porec, I would be here for 7 days - the 7 days I spent there recalled because there was not one single problem.
All the people in the town really want to see more tourists - they are the main source of income, so they are really freindly and most of them speak English :) With cruises along the coast and coach tours through Istria, you will not be bored here!
SO go and visit!

Croatia isn't the sort of place people think about going to, is it? Although I think it's getting more well-known now with the publicity it's been getting in holiday programmes etc. Your opinion has certainly tempted me to go there one day!

Advantages: Easily accessible by car from Europe, still value for money, lovely beaches Disadvantages: everytime you tell your friends you've been there you'll have to answer the 'but what about the war?' question :-)
