We wanted a place in the sun for a few days to chill out after the heat in KL and PD was the obvious choice and I was not disappointed. I know there is not alot to see in PD but all I wanted was the sand and sea without having to go too far. An hour journey by car took us to our weekend getaway. This was Avillion Hotel, a 5 star hotel on the 3rd mile. Don't be put off by the 5 star as you can often find some discount on the rooms booked over the internet or via local travel agents. It is best to avoid weekends and school holidays which is mainly November/ December in Malaysia.

I must say now and again it is sheer luxury to be pampered in such exotic surroundings. The girls at reception swept us off our feet with their welcome and our water chalet was furnished tastefully in the Malay style. Best was my slumber as I felt like being lifted by the gentle rippling of the waves beneath me. Taking a shower with the sky above and the waves below is the open air concept of the luxurious bathroom.

Avillion is a great place for families as they have a choice of 2 pools, kids' activities, great food and the bonus is the extra day bed in every room. My son was not too well and they quickly provided the transport, (free of charge) to the local hospital and he was seen to immediately by the doctor there, again at no cost!

Avillion has grown in popularity and is visited regularly by tourists from Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Although they have only a small stretch of beach front there is access to miles of beach next to it. Alot of locals just visit the beach for the day just to swim or have a picnic. For the people from KL, PD is a firm favourite. There is a good selection of hotels and self catering accommodation .

In the evenings we drove down to PD town where we could get some really delicious Chinese food especially sea food. Just a short distance across from the hotel the pasar malam or local night market serves the local Malay community with lots of Malay dishes. My favourite was the pisang goreng ( bananas fried in batter) followed by the various Malay kueh (cakes).

Most people who go to PD relax by the beach or swimming pool. It was relaxing just reading a book over a beer by the pool or watching the sun slowly slipping away on the horizon as I leaned back on the deckchair outside my room thinking I could just sit here forever admiring the deep blue sea overlooking the Straits of Malacca . It may not be everyone's idea of paradise but offers a good alternative to the more popular beaches of Langkawi, Tioman, Redang and Pangkor Island.
