When I was in Mauritius, I stayed at Labourdonais Hotel which is found at the Waterfront at Port Louis. Port-Louis, I can say, is the busiest place I have ever been to on the island. It is small, hot and cramped but a marvellous place for shopping.
I went to the Port Louis market which is a dirty and crowded and somewhat smelly open aired market but the people and vendors are extremely friendly. That I can easily say about Mauritians. They are undoubedly among the friendliest people I ever encountered during my various travels. AT the market place I bought spieces, including some local spieces, exotic woven placemats, a wonderfully colored tablecloth and an outrageous ammount of local jewellery. These were made out of sea shells, wood, bamboo sticks or pearls.
Other places to see at Port Louis include the Caudan Waterfront, Les Casernes, The Blue Penny Musuem, and the various shopping arcades.
Transportation is easy, there are buses or taxis everwhere
Food is available on every corner of the streets, as well as in nice restaurants.
Go to Port Louis if you happen to be in Mauritius. It's really great!
