The waterfront in Liverpool is,in my opinion,an absolute visual delight largely on account of three simply magnificent buildings, viz, The Royal Liver, the Cunard and the Port of Liverpool buildings. Monumental in scale they contrive to confront the great River Mersey with both dignity and splendour.
The offices of the Port of Liverpool were actually built in 1907 and were designed by Arnold Thornley. Somehow they manage to combine the features of an utterly grand, extravagant, Renaissance palace with those of a great church designed, say,by the likes of Sir Christopher Wren or the great Italian Bernini. I think if you like St. Paul's you will also like the Port of Liverpool building.
The ecclesiastical connection comes about because of the wonderful central classical dome and inside this hugely impressive and beautiful structure of gorgeous white Portland stone,an octagonal hall rises up to the dome with arched galleries running round it at all four levels.
On all my visits to Liverpool I have never tired of visting the waterfront and gazing at these fine buildings. I am hard pushed to think of a waterfront in Britain that can match the grandeur of Liverpool. Cardiff Bay is being regenerated but frankly I dont think it can match that of " The Pool" So many ill informed critics dismiss Liverpool as a bit of a run down has been but a few hours actually spent at the Pier Head and the other grand sites in Liverpool would do wonders to combat ignorance of this great city's architectural heritage which has few equals in England.

Thanks Jason for your interesting comment. I think you make a very valid point although
fortunately the trio of buildings at the Pier Head will be safe from being obscured.

So true, Liverpool has some wonderful architecture scattered around, but it is an unfortunate fact that a lot of it is now becoming obscured by new development.
