PORTMEIRION - THE "PRISONER" VILLAGE

Advantages: beautiful area, fascinating place
Disadvantages: can't see inside all the properties

...took the opportunity to visit Portmeirion Village near Porthmadog. The Village is mainly famous for being the outside location where 1960's television show "The Prisioner" was filmed. The Village is a collection of quaint, colourful buildings and it is well worth a visit. WHERE IS IT? +++++++++++ The Village is in North Wales and it is signposted off the A487 at Minffordd near Porthmadog. You turn off in the village of Minffordd and travel down ...
...OF THE VILLAGE +++++++++++++++++++++ Portmeirion is a purpose built village on a peninsula off the cost of Snowdonia. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis was an architect who had a dream of building a village that complimented the natural beauty of the area without spoiling it. He purchased Portmeirion in 1925 for around £5,000. He then spent the next 50 years developing the village. He died in 1978 shortly after erecting his last building. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis ...

Portmeirion Village

Advantages: A Good Day Out
Disadvantages: None

...visit You will find Portmeirion in the northern part of Wales it is a popular resort on the coast of Snowdonia. When I first visited Portmeiron for the first time I just fell in love with the place. It was like visiting a magical village with its colourful painted houses and cottages and arches etc.Yes it has an Italian flavour to it and I was certainly very amazed with the various buildings and fountains and courtyards So who created this wonderful ...

In the 1930s it became very popular with a number of Artists and Writers like Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw and H G Wells are just a few to mention. Also King Edward V111 also made a visit to Portmeirion before he was King. When you arrive at Portmeirion after you have parked the car you will come across the Toll Gate which is near by. This is not the original structure ...

Graeanfryn Farm in North Wales - camping and caravanning site

Advantages: Not too far from Portmadog, sandy beaches around 1 mile away, prices quite reasonable
Disadvantages: Toilets/showers could have been a lot cleaner, terrible Welsh weather, not much space on site

and places of interest, and visiting some I discovered there are lots of nice places to visit in the area, for example on our way to the site we spent a day in Portmeirion (I will try and get round to reviewing this soon) which is like an Italian village in the middle of North Wales. * The prices for staying on the site are fairly reasonable, we have stayed on more expensive sites before which aren't much better. We have also stayed on cheaper sites which are about the same standards so the prices aren't excellent, but they are good. * Although we didn't use it, there is a barbeque area on the site, with BBQs and picnic benches. Since you weren't allowed campfires or to use disposable barbeques on the grass I think this is a good idea. * And of course, the pub down the road which you could easily walk to and which was a very nice place to go ...

The Long & Winding Road to Xanadu .. Portmeirion

Advantages: Superbly Pretty Mediterranean-Style Village On the Welsh Coast...
Disadvantages: Half the fun is getting there... or perhaps not.

practical joke? We took another turn, to the right this time, and we were there at last. Portmeirion. THE DESTINATION: Portmeirion, for those unfamiliar with it, is a life-sized model village located on a craggy, isolated little peninsula on Cardigan Bay, south west of the Snowdonia national park, in Wales. It was the brainchild and life's work of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, an architect, eccentric, conservationist and visionary. Clough's vision was of a perfectly proportioned, perfectly unique little village. In creating it, he sought to demonstrate that thoughtful development could neatly co-exist with a naturally beautiful setting, and that as much attention should be paid to the design of a town itself, as to the individual buildings of which it is comprised. He searched far and wide to find the ideal location for his Xanadu, discounting ...
