Pao de Acucar - art deco splendour
Review of Residencial Pao de Acucar, Porto by
casadacha
Advantages: very beautiful, helpful staff
Disadvantages: interesting bathrooms
I have stayed at the Pao de Acucar twice and have enjoyed it both times.
It has a fantastic art deco staircase and art deco furniture in the lobby and also in the rooms.
The rooms vary, some have very old fashioned (art deco?) bathrooms - we had one with a giant boiler over the bath!
Great central location, they can arrange parking at the garage down the road if you want which is an experience when you come to pick your car up (you might find ... ...a steep ramp, but if your concerned then will bring it down to the entrance for you - it is just so they can cram more cars in there.
The breakfast was good - plenty of choice and good coffee. They have a lounge with internet access which is handy, and a lift which is good.
Staff are very helpful and friendly ...

Great for plane spotters
Review of Ipanema Park Hotel, Porto by
jtamagnini
Advantages: Good location to transport links
Disadvantages: Can be a noisy night
The Ipanema Park is now about 15 year old and needing a bit of TLC however it is still a great hotel. It is located near Pasteleira which is a social housing area but do not be detracted from it. As with all major European cities it is also near Boavista which is one of the richest areas in the city.
If you are lucky to be staying on the west side you will get lovely views over the sea and the river, just don't look down as you will see an old soap ... ...good compared to UK efforts in the 60s and 70s but it is the quality of people and dirty streets that undo it all.
To the East side you would get lovely views into the old city BUT for the high rise luxury apartment blocks in the way...
It has two swimming pools, one covered at street level that also has the health club and gym. The second is on the roof on the 16th floor, with fantastic views and a roof top bar. For all you airplane watchers out ...

Costa do Sol - great value
Review of Costa do Sol Residencial, Porto by
casadacha
Advantages: Price, great breakfast
Disadvantages: no lift, long walk to town
I have stayed here a few nights when arriving at Porto airport on evening flights. I have always found the rooms to be clean and of a reasonable size, with good bathroom facilities.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and will arrange a hire car for you if you need one. There is also parking in the underground car-park (although this might test your reversing skills!).
