... In fact, Porto, as it’s called in Portuguese, is the country’s second city, and is rich, industrious, friendly and fun! The people are really friendly – even in a country where friendliness to strangers is common.

...of the Douro. The name Porto means port in Portuguese – the harbour kind, not the wine -, so no guessing what it’s major industry was! When the country was still a duchy of the kingdom of Leon, it was named for it’s major town, PortoCale, since Lisbon was still in the hands of the Moors. When King Afonso Henriques secured independence the country took it’s name from the same root – which must really annoy the Lisbonites ... ...‘Lisbon plays, Braga prays and Porto works’, so the northerners look down on the ‘soft southerners’ from the capital – it cuts both ways. Oporto is at the hub of Portugal's northern industrial region and its wealth is obvious, with a palacial Stock Exchange, the Clerigos tower built in the C18th by an Italian architect; Sao Bento railway station with 20,000 hand-painted tiles of historical scenes decorating the walls ...

Advantages: Beautiful City, Excellent Night Life Disadvantages: Can't Find Any
...it's enough to know that Porto is a Beautiful city with the Douro River (you can make a trip by ferry departing from Ribeira to Spain) as a great landscape and of course the tasteful Port (you can visit the Porto caves where this wine is made).
If you're looking for fun, I suggest going to Ribeira and Foz where you can find great bars and discos.
In the summer you have several beaches to go (not far from Porto, 4/5 miles away), among them Miramar ... ...as well, and again great fun at night(better go to Francelos for fun 1 or 2 miles away from Miramar)
If you like to shop and good restaurants, either you can go to Boavista (the expensive area of Porto, where you can find the best 5*** hotels as well), or you can go to Cedofeita (the less expensive area). In Cedofeita there is several monuments really beautiful and very old, among them the famous Clerigos tower (the view from there is great). You ...

Advantages: excellent service Disadvantages: small plane
...Recently i went on holiday to Portugal, in the agricultural north.
I had to fly from Heathrow (London) to Porto (Portugal).
I had never flewn with TAP (Air Portugal) before, and when i saw the plane in the terminal i was slightly worried as the planes are quite small and look a bit delicate!
When checking in, the TAP staff were really friendly and helpful and full of reassurance. As i am a very nervous flyer, they even radioed the cabin crew on the plane to look out for me!
The flight left the airport dead on time, and on the return flight we actually landed about 15 mins earlier than expected even though we had to circle heathrow about 4 times whilst waiting for a landing slot!!!(this must be a miracle!)
Once on board and waiting to take off, i was quite impressed with the interior of the plane. Although not incredibly spacious...

Advantages: Good Shopping and Great Sun Disadvantages: None
...A break in Portugal is full of good food, beautiful atmosphere and wonderful wine and beer. The Capital Lisbon is full off divertment for all kind of people. If you enjoy sun go to Algarve and stay in Tavira or Monte-Gordo, great sun the best beach in my life, and is easy because almost everybody speaks English. The prices are very good and because £1 is almost 330$00 you don't spend much in there and can do everything. I would definitely recommend this Country for you to visit. GO offer cheap flights from Stansted airport to Lisbon,Porto and Faro. I traveled with Tap Air Portugal and the service was great, very kind and they speak good English....

All the places we stopped at were fantastic. We even went back to Portugal for a holiday at a later date.
We enjoyed the cruise, but felt that it had too many older people aboard. They insisted on sticking to timings, we felt it was because of them that there were queues. What I mean is, meal times were between certain times, but the older people had to arrive right on the dot, know what I mean?...
