Portofino's is one of the few restaurants left in the east end of Grand Cayman. For those of you who don't know, Cayman Islands were hit hard by Hurricane Ivan 12 September 2004. Much of the island is still being rebuilt and much of it has been sadly abandoned.
The East End of Grand Cayman is the remote side away from the tourists and away from the cruise ships! If you don't mind remote than this is the place to be. There are only about 3 restaurants open currently (September 2005) in the East End so you are not really spoilt for choice….Portofino;s specialty (like most Cayman places) is jerk chicken. You can get a fantastic jerk chicken sandwich for lunch and with fries and sauce and it will cost less than 10 USD - those of you who have been to Cayman will think wow what a deal - those of you who haven't will think ---How Much???? But a lunch for under 20 USD in a restaurant is a real steal. The chicken is really tender and they got the spices in the jerk sauce just right. They also do jerk pork and plain chicken for lunch amongst other traditional things but really to go to Cayman and not have jerk chicken would be a mistake.
The restaurant is clean and bright and has is right on the beach so has a great view of the water. The staff is friendly and courteous and all too willing to help. I can't say that the food is worth the drive out from the capital, but for setting alone it is a must see on your way to Rum Point!
