Last year in July/August I travelled with an German organisation to Portsmouth. I lived in Portsmouth at a host family. It was the first time I really spent alone in Great Britain and it was fantastic. I flew with a plane from berlin to Heathrow Airport and then we were drove to portsmouth by tawi, organised by the language school. I travelled to England with three other German girls and we lived in different families. But now something to Portsmouth!
Position:
Portsmouth is a town in South England on the coast. You only need one and a half hour to Portsmouth from Heathrow Airportby car. It is near of Southmpaton.
Sights:
Portsmouth is a historical town. The most famous sight is the HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's ship). It is in the old part of Portsmouth near the harbour where you can go to the Isle of Wight. It is a very small ship but everyone who visited Portsmouth saw this sight. Near the Ship there are a museum and other ships,too. Some of the ships is the HMS Warrior. In Portsmouth are many sights of ships and the army. One interesting sight for me is the Southsea Pier. It is in the South of Portsmouth in the part Soutsea. At this Pier the people fish and there is a casino,too. My friend and I went to this Pier very often. We lived in a big street and every evening we go to the Sea and to the Canoe Lake and the Pier.
We go to the Merian School of English. This is a language schooöl for many international people. Every day we had school and after school we go to visit some sights. We went to Bowling at Old Portsmouth and Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight is a isle near the coast. You need ca. 15 minutes to the Isle from the harbour in Porstmouth.
We only visit the Isle for two hours and so we didn't saw many of it. But it was interesting. it was very hot and so all people was at the beach. The place which we were visit was big.I thought the Isle of Wight is a small Isle but it wasn't so. We made a one-day trip to the Roman place Bath in the Northwest of Portsmouth. It is a vey old town and we visit the Roman Baths. Then we mad a trip to Beaulieu where we visit a car museum. It was interesting and we see many cars. We go swimming to the Pyramides at the coast in the South. One day we was going to ica-skating and it was interesting to see how I can do ice-skating at a hot day with 29 degree.
Shopping:
I didn't have many time to shop in Porstmouth because the shops close at 5 pm. This wasn't good because our school finished at 1 pm and we visited things till 5 pm. One day we go shopping and it was good. A little bit expensive but this is normal in UK. We visit the "Cascades Shopping Arcade" and we thought that it is a very small shopping centre. In Germany especially in Berlin we had everywhere big shopping centres. In Portsmouth are many shopping streets and so I find many things to buy. But I missed some gift shops. Portsmouth has a second shopping center,too the Southsea Shopping Centre. It is in the Historic Old part of Poutsmouth. There I found a McDonals restaurant and some famous shops.
Transportion:
The school spent us a bus ticket for one week and so we had no problems to go to all places. There are many busses and so we went to all places.
For Tourists:
At the second week in Porstmouth my friend and I go on Sunday to the Tourist Centre at the coast. There we find a bus tour through Portsmouth and it was quite good. We saw all places again and some new,too. It wasn't expensive only 2 pounds ( I think it). In Portsmouth are many touist information centres and so tourists haven't a problem.
My impression:
All in all was it quite good in Portsmouth. Every workday we go to a park and eat our food for lunch and we saw many of Portsmouth. The school was okay. We had much fun. This year I would go to Portsmouth,too but I can't go through it because I will go to England for a school year and then it is expensive. Portsmouth is a great town and that`s why I think my family will go to Portmouth in summer 2003.
