A surpisingly classy hotel in small-town Portugal
Review of Hotel Cidnay, Sto Tirso, Portugal by koshkha

Advantages: Very stylish, surprisingly cheap
Disadvantages: Not a lot of reasons for most people to go there

...time I stayed in a hotel in small-town Portugal was nearly 20 years ago in the out-of-the-way north-eastern town of Braganca. It was a tiny hotel with a room so small you had to walk over the bed to get to the window and every evening the restaurant would fill up with men in blue overalls, drinking the local hooch, smoking cigarettes out of the corner of their mouths and waiting to see the latest Brazilian soap operas on the TV that was constantly ...
...with a booking for the Hotel Cidnay. It was going to cost me around Euro70 for the night so I was expecting something pretty basic. I certainly didn't expect a stylish chic hotel that looked like it was straight out of the pages of Elle Deco. Where is it? Santo Tirso is a small industrial town about half an hour north of Porto. I would imagine you'd probably only go there for business or because you knew someone local. Wikipedia tells me ... Read review

the worse, there is overbooking
Review of Hotel Lido, Estoril by madrid160807

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: cleanliness, service, overbooking

This hotel have an awful service, starting with the breakfast, that is horrible, and the cleanliness: towels are broken, blankets are dirty and the swimmingpool's toilets are so dirty that is better avoid to go into. Moreover the recepcion's service is horrible and painful. I'm going to tell my situation: we arrived to the hotel, here we was assisted for a miss, who told us that the hotel had a problem with the pipings and we had a book in other ...
...asked where was the other hotel but we didn't have answer. When we arrived to the other hotel we realiced that this hotel was too far, and there wasn't transport near to go to the beach, and to go to lisbon. We decided to go to the beach by taxi, because we didn't have other option. When we return to the hotel we asked if they are going to pay the taxi's price but the denied to paid us. When a partner ask for the security box key, the receptionist ... Read review

Beach front perfection!
Review of Da Praia Do Sol, Setubal by clarej69

Advantages: Location!
Disadvantages: Nothing!

...and came to find Costa da Caparica. --Getting There-- If you are on a late flight into Lisbon i would say you would be best to catch a taxi to the hotel. This costs around €40.00 which isnt too bad for a 25 minute jouney but i think some of the taxi drivers do try and pull the wool over your eyes especially if you are obviously a tourist. The taxis do charge an extra €1.60 for luggage, not much i know but worth mentioning. If you are on a earlier ...
...153 bus (€2.50) to Costa Da Caparica. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the bus stop. I found it best to catch a taxi to the hotel and the catch the bus to the airport on your way home once you have your bearings. --Hotel Info-- The 'hotel' is not so much of a hotel, rather a hostel but please dont forget about this little gem just beause of that. Even though Praia Do Sol is sold to you as a hotel all paperwork inside and around the rooms show ... Read review

Hotel in Portugal's Paris-Hint of Hercule Poirot
Review of Astoria Hotel Coimbra by bigush

Advantages: Friendly Staff, Great location
Disadvantages: Doesn't have all the mod cons

The Hotel Astoria is situated in Coimbra, one of the four major cities of Portugal. The other three are Lisbon, Oporto and Braga, and the Portuguese (bless them!) have a little ditty to describe all four. They say, in between mouthfuls of roast suckling pig, that 'Braga prays, Oporto works, Coimbra studies and Lisbon plays'. From that you can probably guess that Coimbra is the principal university town, their version of Oxbridge. It is, in my opinion ...
...at one time the Hotel Astoria was once the premier hotel in Coimbra. I also know that Coimbra was once an important stop on the grand tour of Europe back in Edwardian times. Coimbra is a classically beautiful city. The hotel certainly hasn't changed much since then. I loved it for that reason but could understand that many might not. Someone really should suggest holding a Murder Mystery weekend there. The spirit of Poirot might join in. ... Read review

Portuguese unusual but attractive location
Review of Hotel Suave Mar, Braga by imogen49

Advantages: Attractive hotel and courtyard, friendly staff
Disadvantages: not many other children, lack of activities

...at this hotel Location Hotel Suave Mar is located in Esposende in North Portugal. It is about half hour on the coach from the airport at Oporto. This is a great distance for the kids' tolerance. This is on top a much shorter flight from the UK compared to other sunny destinations. It is a smallish hotel, which gave it a comfortable and cosy atmosphere. The hotel is set a little walk away from the centre of Esposende where there is a pleasant ...
...the central courtyard of the hotel consisting of its swimming pool and sun terrace area. This was a more interesting look out than the front of the hotel as there was more to see and be involved in. It cost slightly more but was well worth it and I believe it was necessary in order to get the extra bed in. The room was regularly and well cleaned. Inside the room, it was air-conditioned and had a television. There wasn't much in English on the television ... Read review
