Content:
Only the first floor dancefloor and the roof terrace were open and the ground floor and upper dancefloor were closed. I had heard it had 3 floors so this was a dissapointment. But I do beleive more floors are open on a saturday. The club got quite busy and there did not seem to be much space. Certainly the toilets and the roof terrace were busy! The music on the dancefloor was not too bad with a wide range of pop songs playing. It is open till 4am, whereas most nightclubs in Newcastle shut at 3.
People:
The people were very chatty and forth-coming. Most of the customers made us feel very welcome and were fun to be around! They treated us like friends. On the contary, the staff apart from one of the bouncers were not really helpful or friendly at all. It was also a pity that there were a few not so nice customers too. One man came upto me for no reason and started picking faults with what I was wearing and another man was completely weird and on drugs or something and started talking about inflicting pain on people when he got them into bed.
Prices:
Admission to the club was £8 (and is £10 on a saturday). I do not mind paying this, but after paying this, drinks were also very expensive. I did expect drinks to be expensive but I felt annoyed that cans of Carling cost £3.60 and still bottled water cost £1.80. The special deals were on a type of alcopop (£2.50 a bottle) and aftershock (1.50 a shot) - (But to me these are normal prices you would expect to pay if there were no deals on and it is no good if like me you stick to pints). The gay pubs in Newcastle are also very expensive on a weekend and have certainly shot up in price (to my horror) in the last year! If you want to go to the gay pubs and then the Powerhouse on a drinking session take over £100 out with you, (or do what many people seemed to do and that was get into the night club and not buy any drinks or get one drink to last the whole night). The prices might reflect the cost of going out in Newcastle as some people did not seem to recogn that these prices were that high; but I did see a straight bar that night in Newcastle that was selling drinks for a very cheap £1 a pint!
Overall:
I am giving the powerhouse a fair and a bit generous 2 star rating. It would have to be terrible to get a one star but nonetheless, although it had some good points I will look for another venue if I decide to drink in Newcastle again. If people annoy me on purpose when I have had a drink I am scared of getting angry with them and facing a criminal record! With me being a student the experience cost way too much money but even for people with a very well paid job I do not think it is worth the money. The gay night on a monday in Darlington has less bitchy people and its free to get into the club, cheap pints, still busy and open till 4am. Admittedly the powerhouse does have many fans but it is not my cup of tea. I realise that I have friends who go out in Darlington which does make my night out better, but evenso, I think that the Powerhouse is overrated!
