Christmas In The Old Town

Advantages: Beautiful Xmas Market, Great Personal Memories
Disadvantages: Crowded

...memories for me is the Old Town Square. Situated on the Eastern banks of the river Vltava, the area of Stare Mestro is the traditional heart of Prague and at its middle is this wonderful town square. Now, had I visited at another time of year then I think that my review would be quite short and of little interest as the square, based on what I have read, for the majority of the year is a pleasant but large expanse of empty space. On its sides you ...
...this square so I will not recommend you go out of your way to see it, because you will already have done so. My advice is that, if you can, you should visit Prague in December to take in the most amazing Christmas market in a beautiful Old Town Square. ...

A bridge over, not so troubled, waters.

Advantages: Truly beautiful and historic
Disadvantages: Can get very busy at times

CHARLES BRIDGE PRAGUE When I booked to go to Prague for a short break I knew nothing at all about the city. The little visitors guide I bought told me that one of the must see' places I must visit on my holiday was 'Charles Bridge' As it happens, our hotel in Malá Strana was quite close to the famous bridge and we crossed it every time that we went to the Old town. This little book also told me that the bridge would be very crowded ...
... So what is Charles Bridge? Charles Bridge (Karlov Most) is to Prague is what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, the Tower to London etc. It is possibly Prague's most famous landmark. It is an impressive stone Gothic bridge that crosses the Vltava River and connects the Old Town and Malá Strana. For the first few centuries of its life the bridge was called the Stone Bridge (Kamenný most). The construction of the bridge began in 1357 and it was ...

Good Op - er - a review on Prague State Opera

Advantages: Neo-classical architecture and wonderful entertainment.
Disadvantages: Steps leading to entrance

...a performance of the Prague State Opera. As is usually my way, I researched what was on and how much the tickets were way prior to our visit. Prague State Opera has a comprehensive and easy-to-navigate website http://www.opera.cz. So having discovered what was playing whilst we were to be there, it was a decision as to whether to book online or try for tickets at the time. After Vienna and finding that we could pick up tickets from the touts for ...
...when you arrive. Prague State Opera stands in Wenceslas Square opposite to the National Museum. According to the maps, it should be very easy to find with the metro station, Museum, being situated only minutes away. However, at the time of our visit, some sort of road works was taking place making the Opera House difficult to reach. The Prague Opera House opened on 5th January 1888 as a German theatre built to rival the Czech National Theatre. The ...

March on up to the top of the hill....

Advantages: Amazing views of Prague once you reach the top!
Disadvantages: The staircase made me feel dizzy.

Petrin Hill Petrin is a hill in the centre of Prague, and it takes some climbing to get to the top! It rises 130m above the left bank of the Vltava River and it's covered in parks, making a great site for a lovely walk, and it's a favoured recreational area for the people of Prague. You can see the hill from Charles Bridge and on the top of Petrin Hill in Prague you may notice an Effiel Tower like tower at the very top. This is the Petrin Hill ...
...it's on the top of Petrin Hill it does have almost the same altitude as it's French lookalike. It was built in 1891 and was used as not only an observation tower, but also as a transmission tower. Today though this tower is a good tourist attraction as it offers spectacular views of Prague as despite it only being 60m high, it's setting on the top of the hill does give it extra dizzying height. On a clear day it is possible to see the highest peak ...

With a thousand dollars we'd be millionaires

Advantages: 4 pence bottles of beer says it all
Disadvantages: Fighting old women for a Tesco trolley

...a thousand spires had a Tesco worried me. I had come here for the culture but I was now shamefully excited about the fact that I was about to be able to eat Crunchy Nut Cornflakes again. The fact that they were about half the price you'd pay in the UK was also an interesting distraction. I then noticed a special offer of 330ml bottles of beer at 4 pence each and my flabber was well and truly gasted. With a quick burst of enthusiasm I was off running ...
...weekend you got to the Tesco in Prague there are two queues at each checkout. One waiting to purchase items and one waiting to collect trolleys off people who'd just finished their shopping! Why the store experienced a trolley shortage I couldn't understand but it didn't detract from the fact that after three weeks of travelling around Europe on a shoestring, Prague's Tesco is a dream come true. Everyday items at a fraction of the cost huge and ...
