The beautiful, baroque, city of a hundred spires,Prague,is a gem. Since the "velvet revolution" that saw the overthrow of the Communist regime, this lovely city has become a major tourist destination, and its not hard to figure out why!
The city provides something for everyone ! There is conventional and experiental theatre, opera, classical and folk music, and good dining out. Then there are the pubs and the marvellous Czech beers such as Budvar,Pilsner Urquell and Radegast, which rank among the finest lagers in the world
For starters a bit of geography. The Vltava river snakes its way through the city.On the left hand side of the river are the little quarter (Mala Strana) and the site of the castle (Hradcany) whilst on the right are the old town (Stare Mesto) ,the new town (Nove Mesto) and the Jewish quarter (Josefov). Hradcany Castle overlooking the river is the number onetourist attraction. It is very popular so it is best to get there early in the morning. The old town is very interesting. There you will find the town hall, a complex of buildings erected between the 14 th and 19 th centuries. A huge clock on an outside wall shows the 12 apostles,Jesus,a sleleton, and a cockerel when it strikes the hour. Also in the old town is the Baroque Clementinum. Once a Jesuit College,it now houses the state library of the Czech Republic.
Prague is one of Europe's great cultural centres.Charles University dates back to the 14 th century and this lovely city has been home to the likes of Rilke,Kafka,Kundera and the playwright turned President Vaclav Havel. Mozart lived in Prague for a number of years. The city has a great musical traditition and the Czech Philarmonic Orchestra, founded in 1896, is a fine orchestra. Indeed the visitor cannot walk the streets of Prague without being made aware of the musical heritage. Regular concerts are held at the Smetana Hall,at the Dvorak Hall and, when the weather is good,on the steps of the National Museum. Jazz too has a good following whilst music, cabaret and dancing are all featured at the downtown variety clubs. Theatre too is alive and well in Prague. The Lanterna Magica is a good joint to see a unique Czech magic lantern show and the Theatre Image features "Black Theatre",which combines dance, music and pantomine to tell exciting stories. Without doubt the most popular beverage in town is ...beer. Not only is Czech beer excellent but it is also quite strong. You can enjoy it together with a few sausages or gulas at U Fleku which specialises in brown ale, or at the U Tomase near Prague Castle. Eating out opportunities are plentiful. Try the classic Czech dishes such as leg of boar in garlic and juniper berries, roast goose with cabbage, goulash, schnitzel and carp and there are a lot of fine Moravian wines to sample. There you have it - a run down of some of the many attractions of the beautiful city of Prague in the Czech Republic.
