◄ Floods Away ►

Advantages: An interesting and impressive zoo.
Disadvantages: Low lying position near river.

★Introduction ★
Prague Zoo was first opened to the public in 1931; probably before the flood of 2002 few people knew of its existence.

Many of you will remember the shocking floods in central Prague in the summer of 2002. The news pictures showed the famous Charles Bridge almost totally submerged. Much of the focus of attention was however centred on Prague Zoo which is situated to the north west of Prague just ...
...14th 2002 brought chaos to Prague Zoo. Some parts of the zoo were 10m deep in water. Many animals died as a result; some 134 drowned or died later from stress including many birds, an elephant, two hippos, a lion, a seal and a gorilla. A huge evacuation project had to be carried out to move 1029 animals that were affected by the flood. This included elephants, hippos, birds, big cats and more. Many buildings were also completely destroyed. Public ... more

How Big???

Advantages: So many animals to see, zoo helps with conservation work
Disadvantages: Some of the larger animals needed bigger enclosures

...definitely wanted to visit was Prague Zoo. I am still undecided on how I feel about zoo's as I believe wild animals should be allowed to be wild. One of the reasons we were keen to visit Prague zoo was because there are heavily involved in conservation work and I believe that this is vital to help many of the animals which are becoming endangered. Location Prague zoo is located a few miles outside of Prague City Centre so you will need to use public ...

Feeding Time

Advantages: Affordable full day out, large parkland area, range of species
Disadvantages: Some Enclosures were too small, concrete and cold

Prague Zoo is situated a few miles outside the city centre itself and can be reached via the tube line C to Holesovice and then by bus 112. The bus itself can be quite an ordeal as it gets absolutely packed with passengers and reminded me more of transport in Asia than anywhere else! Thankfully it is only a few kilometres to the park entrance. Prague Zoo has changed enormously since 1931 when it opened. Back then there were only 8 hectares, and less ...
...It must be mentioned that Prague Zoo has had a pivotal role in saving the Przelwalski horse and over 200 have been bread here with some released back to the Gobi desert. The lower half of the zoo is home to the many birds species as well as smaller mammals. There are also a number of pavilions in this section, including the Pavilion of Big Cats, Pavilion of Penguins, Pavilion of Big Tortoises and the Pavilion of Big Mammals. While I enjoyed most ...

Prague - A day at the zoo

Advantages: So many animals its impossible to name them all
Disadvantages: Very little information was in english

Prague Zoo ----------------- I have just returned form a 4 day break in Prague, when looking at places of interest to visit Prague Zoo was one which we had on our list of things to see, we were under the impression this would take up about half a day so we decided to set off at around 10.30am how wrong we were! **Background of Prague Zoo** Prague zoo was originally opened in 1931 in the Trojan Valley and consisted of only 8 hectares of accessible ...
...150 exhibits to view. Prague zoo is a member of many different breeding programmes internationally the most famous being that of the przewalski's horses. In 2004 the very first lowland gorilla was born in the Czech Republic they named it Moja and she is pictured on many leaflets and map guides as they are very proud of this. **Getting to the Zoo** When we arrived in Prague we bought a 7 day public transport ticket which we found extremely good ...

Sieber Hotel, Prague

Advantages: Great location, great price, beautiful rooms
Disadvantages: None

, which is relatively cheap when you compare it to mini bar prices in the UK! Just a few doors along is a small grocerie shop and a bar. There is also a larger bar around the corner. Both are a great stop off on your way home. We could not believe the prices! As an example; a pint of local lager and a large gin and tonic was coming in around £2. Not to be beaten I'm sure you'll agree. We found the prices were higher in the city centre, (although still reasonable) particularly in the bars and restaurants overlooking the squares. Lots to see and do and if you like shopping there is lots to be had - a great mix of high street and designer, at great prices. Two recommendations for Prague should you visit are; Prague castle and Prague Zoo. With regards to the latter - possibly one of the best I've ever been to. It rivals any in the UK I ...

A Few Old Churches?

Advantages: Compact and easy to walk around, plenty to see and do in five days
Disadvantages: can be overcrowded with tourists at times

, and is a memorial to the ghettos which were used to house the Jews in the second world war, before they were transported to places such as Auschwitz. This was a harrowing, but important trip, and if you have the time, then I thoroughly recommend it ? operated by Martin tours and details are available from all reasonable hotels. On a slightly lighter note, we took a bus trip to the 60 hectare zoo, which has been open in Prague since the 1930s and overlooks the Vltava. Entrance fees are extremely cheap and there is a wide variety of animals and birds from across the world. Eating and Drinking ------------------------- Generally speaking, eating and drinking was very affordable compared to our UK standards. Beer was available from around 20 CZK upwards in some places, and a traditional Czech lunch (goulash and dumplings) was available ...

Czech It Out!!!

Advantages: So much to see and do, inexpensive
Disadvantages: Some areas can be a bit rough and seedy

and ages of uphill countryside walking to get there but I'm sure there are much easier ways to do it! It was a nice walk though as the views were so breath taking. If you thought Prague Castle was high go up and take a look at this. When we got up to it we didn't dare go up it because it was massive and we're both wimps and afraid of heights. If you're Not go up I can't imagine how amazing it would be. There's a few stalls selling refreshments and there was a man sat there who takes photos of it to sell, you can also have you're photo taken and he puts it on a postcard with the Prague attractions around you - these are cheesy but cute. You have to pay to go up the tower but I'm sure it was only about £1. It is 60m high and you have to climb 299 steps to get to the top! There is a zoo which is easily accesible by boats, which would be ...
