At the beginning of October 2008 I had to travel to Londn to attend a job interview. I wanted a reasonably priced hotel that was close to my interview location and also that offered good access to some of the London tourist attractions. The Premier Inn County Hall Hotel fit the bill and also delivered so much more.
I caught a taxi from the train station and the first thing that I noticed when getting there was that the part of Belvedere Road in which the hotel is situated has barriers at either end so only traffic that has a reason for being there is allowed in...this makes the front of the hotel quieter than most places in London. The building also makes a rather striking impression as it is the listed building which used to hold the GLC. The only problem with this is that the entrance to the hotel is up a short flight of stairs and may not be accessible to anybody with walking difficulties (you would have to contact the hotel to find out if there is an alternative access route). The County Hall building also houses another hotel (Marriott), several museums and art galleries, the London Aquarium and several restaurants so there is no shortage of things to do around the area especially when you also realise that the river Thames and London Eye is just around the corner and Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament are just a short stroll across the bridge.
The hotel was very clean and the staff very welcoming and polite. Check in was so easy; the room had been reserved through the Premier Inn website and so it was just a matter of paying for the room with a credit card. Check in is not until after 2pm but you can drop off your luggage for free while you take in some of the sights.
The lifts are clean and very smooth - these can only be accessed with a room keycard so remember to have your with you at all times. The rooms are very nice especially considering the price. My room included a double bed, TV, tea and coffee making facilities, hanging space for clothes, heater, shower and bath. There didn't seem to be any air conditioning facilities but as I was there in October I didn't require any and I assume that during the summer provision may be made (you may need to check this out if necessary). The room didn't offer any spectacular views but I could see the top of the London Eye over the roof of the adjoining part of the building (very nice when lit up at night).
Breakfast was very good consisting of an all-you-can-eat hot buffet (bacon, eggs, beans, sausages etc.), cereals, yoghurts, croissants, toast, porridge, juice, tea and coffee. There were plenty of vegetarian options (including vegetarian sausages in the hot buffet). Other meals were good and reasonably priced - sanwiches, jacket potatoes and salads were available in the bar at lunchtime and a large selection of british foods (steak, gammon, burgers, fish and chips, roast chicken, sausage and mash) and others (risotto, pasta, curry) were available in the restaurant during the evening.
The service from all of the staff was fantastic and the stay was very enjoyable. Check out was just as easy as check in and athough you have to be out of your room by 11am you can lave your luggage to be collected later if you want to spend more time in the city.
Overall a good experience and I would be happy to stay at that hotel again.

I knew they'd first sold the building to some japanese conglomerate, but didn't know about the travel inn being there. Thanks for the review.

how much was it? I know they are normally quite cheap but i just wondered if this was different in london. I wonder if it would be noisy at weekends, as I imagine they get quite booked up
