Premier Travel Inn, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham

On Sunday 27th November, myself and my boyfriend were travelling to Nottingham from Sheffield for a concert. As neither of us drive, we had to get the train to Nottingham and stay overnight as the concert wasn't to finish until past 11pm. So we decided to book a room at the Premier Travel Inn on Goldsmith Street, which was very near to the venue (the Rock City) where we were seeing the show.

I have used the Premier Travel Inn, Holiday Inn and Travel Lodge (which I believe to all be the same company) on several occasions. As you may have noticed, I have done a review on their GMEX hotel in Manchester where we stayed again for a concert (actually it was for the same band, Opeth). Before staying at the GMEX, I had never had any problems with any of their hotels before; in fact it was always a real pleasure staying in their hotels. So we decided we would forget the GMEX experience, and book into one of their hotels again.

We booked our room online and it said our room would be available from 1pm, which suited us fine, but we knew we would end up being a little bit later than that.

I don't know how many floors there were to the building as our room was situated on the ground floor, but there were lifts and stairways in reception.

++++++++++

How easy is it to find?

We found the Goldsmith Street Premier Travel Lodge was on the Rock City website because it wasn't too far away. It was only a 5 minute walk to the venue from the hotel which was perfect for us as we didn't know Nottingham very well. From the train station it was a little confusing because our map we printed off didn't show us a real direct route through, and we were travelling on foot, and it took us a good 20 minutes to find it. We discovered that it should have taken us half the time if we had known our way around through the town centre.

There are directions on the website (which I didn't know at the time) as well as a map. We used a different map of the area knowing which street the hotel was on.

The directions for getting to the hotel are as follows:

M1 Jct 26 follow the A610 to City Centre. Once in the City Centre, take a left following signs to Nottingham Trent University (Talbot Street). Turn left at the traffic lights onto Clarendon Street. Continue to next set of traffic lights, turn right, the hotel is on the right.

And as I say, it was literally a 5 minute walk to the Rock City.

For people traveling by car, parking is as follows:

Mon - Thurs

Car parking available on Talbot St. £4.00 from 5.00pm to 9.00am. £1.10 per hour thereafter, up to a maximum of £12.00 per 24 hrs.

To access Talbot St car park, follow hotel directions, instead of turning into Claredon St, stay on Talbot St, car park is on your left.

Park on level three and exit onto chaucer St. Premier Travel Inn is 2 minute walk.

Special requirements and vans should contact the Premier Travel Inn directly.

Fri - Sun

Car parking is available at The Premier Travel Inn. This is a valet service. £6.00 per 24hrs.

How much does it cost?

We booked our room online, and booked a double room for one night. The prices for this hotel are:

Monday - Thursday
£55.95 per room per night

Friday - Sunday
£55.95 per room per night

Which we didn't think was too bad.

As I said in my previous review "I have also in previous Travel Lodges/Inns, stayed in a family room, where there was a double bed as well as a sofa that turned into another 2 single beds, or in one case the sofa turned into a double bed. But this time it was just a double room we stayed in." They have a few different kinds of rooms: Single, double, twin, family and disabled. They offer cots for babies too, so it is suitable for families. They also have a choice of smoking or non smoking rooms.

The Reception

We were told that the rooms would be ready for 1pm, as I have already said, and after narrowly missing our train and having to wait an hour for the next train, we didn't arrive at the hotel until 3:50pm. When we arrived there was one person on the desk, and there seemed to be something going on, but at this point we didn't think much to it. When we got to the desk, said who we were, we had to wait until the girl spoke to a cleaner on a walkie talkie to find out if our room was ready. We were told they had had problems with the cleaning of rooms, and we'd have to wait half an hour and we could either sit in the bar and wait or go for a wander!!! Well with a big bag and having got lost on the way, we didn't want to wander around Nottingham, where we had never been before, while we waited for them to clean a room which was meant to be ready for us at 1pm! We received no apology for the delay and not even an offer of a complimentary drink, which we thought was a bit off since we were waiting for their mess up! She also told us that she would come and get us in half an hour.

We sat in the bar for 40 minutes before deciding that enough was enough. We were going to be late for meeting with a friend at 5pm if it wasn't sorted soon, and we were already looking at missing our dinner. When we got to the reception, it was full of people. People with suitcases just off of flights, and people like us who were still waiting for them to sort their rooms out. The people off the flights were told to wait in the bar because their rooms weren't ready either, and we started fearing the worst!

When we got to the counter we were served by a different girl. The other girl was still there, but serving someone else who had arrived. Again we had to say who we were and that we had a room booked. Then I was asked my last name (because I didn't book it, my boyfriend did) and we were given forms to fill in. As we were doing so, there was a phone call. The other receptionist was just finishing with a customer, but it was the girl dealing with us who answered the phone. She didn't apologize to us for answering the phone or tell us to hold or hang on which we thought was very rude. She could see we were in a hurry (with my constant looking at my watch to hurry her along). Once off the phone we didn't receive an apology either, and the other girl was wandering around doing very little.

Once more the walkie talkie came out asking if there was a room ready for us. The original room we were supposed to have, wasn't the same one we ended up in. They had just finished one and so we were told which room it was. She then procrastinated telling us things which we either already knew or didn't need to know, asking if we were wanting breakfast which we said we didn't, and then being told that if we changed our minds what time breakfast started and ended at. We then got the card for our room and corridor (this is instead of a key, which seemed to be a lot better because it just fits into your wallet or purse like a credit card). Fortunately for her, we are very polite and were in a rush otherwise she would have got an ear full!

We ended up going into the room, dropping off our stuff and leaving almost straight away, and were still late for our friend, and missed an opportunity to get our tea (and ended up not getting food until 12am after the show).

Needless to say, we were not impressed by this poor reception and being kept almost an hour for them to have a room sorted for us.

Décor

Most Premier Travel Inn/Lodges/Holiday Inns have similar décor. Double bed, comfy chair, desk chair, desk/table, 1 picture on the wall (which made it look very bare), mirror behind desk/table, long mirror, side tables, side lamps, wardrobe (which I don't think had any doors on it, but wasn't meant to), an en suite bathroom/toilet, a bible, television/radio/alarm, fan (we were on the ground floor and the window didn't open, so it'll be for when it's hot in the summer). There were 2 extra pillows on top of the wardrobe (which is good because I can't sleep with one pillow), an extra toilet roll and some extra towels. Like the GMEX, this was a Metro. "This is a Premier Travel Inn Metro hotel. You'll find these hotels in prime locations across the UK. Metro bedrooms also include extra facilities like satellite TV, hairdryer, telephone/modem point and shower gel." We did this time have shower gel (Lux I believe, though we never used the shower/bath). We also had a cardboard stand up thing on the TV saying they had wireless internet, but we didn't have a laptop to try this out. The website says "High speed internet access is available in this hotel by WiFi."

There was also a menu, which we didn't look at, for the restaurant, a notice about ordering a pizza in the hotel and what pizza they did (but it didn't have a time when it started from or finished) and the internet access card. And there was a feedback form for you to fill in if you wanted to.

The room was clean, but the bottom of the bed seemed a bit strange. Normally the beds are solid on all sides around the base, but the bottom of the bed just felt like a sheet over a frame. I don't know if it was meant to be like this or if it was broken, it just seemed a little strange comparing it to previous Travel Inns.

The window in the room was very narrow, about the size of a door frame, and to the right of the far wall. When we first went into the room, it was already dark outside, so we had to put the lights on as soon as we walked in. When we got back we hadn't fully shut the curtains and there was a street light blaring in, but once the curtains were closed it was fine. It wasn't until we were leaving that we opened the curtains again (well it was ground floor, and you don't want people looking in do you?) and realized how dark it was in the room! It was grey outside, but it was almost like night at the other side of the room from the window. Very little natural light was coming in, so you would have had to have the light on in there even during the day.

We had problems with the TV too. On the TV you can receive BBC 1, 2 and 3, ITV, Channel 4 and 5, CBeebies, BBC News 24, Chart Show channel and a couple of radio stations. The problem was the reception wasn't the best; we had lines coming in waves over the screen. And although we weren't there just to sit around and watch TV, we turned it on to watch TV before we went to bed (and to find out the latest news) and in the morning before we left, and couldn't believe how band the reception was.

Another thing that had me up in arms was the fact they supplied sanitary bags for ladies to dispose of sanitary towels and tampons (so you don't flush them, which you shouldn't be!!!), but they only supplied 2. Now I had to use these bags, which were very nifty in the way it sealed up, but 2 is just not enough! When you arrive I'm sure most ladies would want to change these things, especially if they've been traveling a long way, so that takes up 1. Then you want to change it before you go to bed, so that's both taken up already. Then you want to change again in the morning, and if there's any time you need or want to in between these times… well, you'll just have to reuse the bag, which I had to do. There was enough room to put a few into the bag, but it seemed a little unhygienic to me.

++++++++++

Before we booked the hotel we found a warning on the website saying "Please be advised there may possible noise due to the central location of the hotel". We were next to a tramline on one side, but outside our window was a little back lane. We were not disturbed by noises outside, but did hear a lorry reversing into the lane mid morning.

We were however woken by banging on doors in our corridor at around 8am. I am still unsure whether this was people in the hotel who knew each other, or staff waking people up to get their breakfast. Either way it happened every time I was about to nod back off to sleep, and I hadn't been feeling 100% for a week or so, and this didn't help matters.

++++++++++

Other information/facilities

As I have said, there was a bar in the hotel, but there was also a restaurant. We didn't use either, apart from waiting in the bar for our room, so I am unsure what they have on offer or how much it costs.

They also have breakfast: "Choose whatever takes your fancy from the full breakfast selection for only £6.95. Or, if you want a lighter option, go for the continental buffet at just £5.25" but again, we never used this so I don't know how good or bad it was. In the past I have had breakfasts in Travel Inns, and vegetarians note that you should tell them in advance that you're a veggie. Some places do put on Quorn sausages as an alternative, or you well get extra portions in whatever you choose.

The hotel also caters for disabled people. "Beds are arranged to enable easy access." But they also state that the rooms are subject to availability, so make sure you book well in advance. I did see a disabled toilet across from the bar along side the Ladies and Gents, and there was a lift in the building too.

++++++++++

So what did I think of the Premier Travel Inn, Goldsmith Street, Nottingham? Well the room itself was ok, other than being very dark, and looking very bare. The shower was static, so it might have been difficult for washing hard to reach parts, but we never used the bath/shower to find out. I was annoyed about the sanitary bags, and they should have at least supplied 3 or more. The bed was a little hard, but it was only for a night.

The card idea instead of a key was definitely a good thing for us, because the keys they used to give you were very big and chunky, and as we were going to a concert, it was easier just to put another card into a wallet.

The bar and restaurant from what we saw, were quite nice looking, but we were only using it as a waiting room, and the toilets there were nice and clean too.

What really annoyed me was how rude the receptionists were, and how we had to wait almost a full hour to get into our room. There is no excuse for this! When they tell you rooms are available from 1pm, you expect to turn up at 3:50pm and get straight into your room. There was no real apology for this, and no complimentary drink or offer of a discount on food or the room. Luckily our friend was very understanding, but it caused us a lot of stress and agro.

This is the second time we have been very disappointed with this company in 2 different cities. We will only use them again if there are no alternatives, but in future we will be looking elsewhere. I used to recommend this company to family and friends, but I will think again in future.

Update (05/12/05)

A couple of people have asked if we complained about our stay. Unfortunatly the next morning when we were leaving, it was the same girls on the desk, so felt uncomfortable complaining to them about themselves. We did however fill in the form, and sent an email as soon as we got back complaining about the poor service.

This morning (5th December) we got a reply to the email:

"I am writing following your recent stay at The Premier Travel Nottingham. I am very disappointed to hear of the delay with your check in. We did experience some difficulties on the 27th November, and as a result bedrooms were not completely cleaned and checked before 2.00pm as normal. I am also disappointed that we did not communicate this effectively and I'm sure that to be disturbed during the night by banging doors resulted in making your stay with us less than enjoyable. Mr Booker, we do offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which states that if you are not completely satisfied, we do not expect you to pay. Obviously, on this occassion, we did not get it right and for this I apologise. I have arranged for you to receive a full refund and this will be processed back onto your maestro card within the next 24 hours. Once again Mr Booker, I apologise for the inconvenience caused and I do hope that I have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Premier Travel Inn Nottingham again in the near future.

Yours Sincerely Tim O'Sullivan General Manager Premier Travel Inn Nottingham City Centre (Goldsmith St.) "

I have to say I was shocked that we did get the apology, and gobsmacked that we were offered a full refund. I did know about the refund, as we complained in the form for the GMEX and received another form to fill in that mentioned their refund they offer, but it wasn't mentioned at this hotel either, and we didn't expect to get anything back.

Due to this, I have changed my rating of this hotel to reflect the swift response and the fact that they did keep their part of the bargain.

Update (07/12/05)

Yes, another update! And another rerating of this company. As I said above, I was shocked we got an apology from the Premier Travel Inn. But after over 48 hrs after receiving the email, no cash has been put back into our account. The email states:

"I have arranged for you to receive a full refund and this will be processed back onto your maestro card within the next 24 hours."

Now I can understand that they're probably very busy, but as a company, you shouldn't promise things which you cannot deliver to customers who are already dissatisfied with your service. This is why I have rerated this hotel once again.

I will keep you all informed of what happens next and whether we see a penny of this promised refund.

**********

Update (08/12/05)

After sending another email to the Travel Inn asking what was going on with the refund, we received an email back this morning telling us:

"Mr Booker

Your card was refunded first thing this morning. Unfortunately,
my reception manager has been off work ill for a couple of days,
hence the delay.

I apologise for any inconvenience caused - your account should be credited shortly.

Regards

Tim"

I am a little bit sceptical since it's the same Tim that emailed us originally telling us we'd be refunded in 24hrs.

We had emailed back thanking him for his quick responce and for resolving the problem so fast, so we would have expected that had there been a problem and he'd seen this email that he would have had the courtesy to email back letting us know about the unfortunate delay due to the sickness of the reception manager.

If we hadn't sent the reminder email, do I think we would have got the refund? I doubt it.

I am very annoyed because the reason we complained in the first place was regarding a lack of communication, and now we find that even after the original complaint, we are still struggling to communicate with this company.

Again, I will keep you all updated on what happens and if we do eventually get this refund.
