Princes Square, within Buchanan St, Glasgow's main shopping fareway, is a shopping centre with a difference. The building dates from 1841, when it was a Merchant square.
When the building was converted in the 1980's the architects carefully worked their design around many of the original features, such as the yellow sandstone walls. To give more height, the basement was excavated to house more retail space. A clear glass dome was added over the whole building to bring in more light.
The exterior of the building was also updated slightly to draw people in. Glass canopies were added over the three entrances from Buchanan Street, one of which is an esclator leading straight to the second level. Additionally a huge peacock feature was added to the top of the building, looking out over Buchanan Street.
In the centre of the centre is an atrium from the lower ground floor to the glass domed roof, which allows excellent opportunities for people watching. This feature also makes it easy to find your way to your stores, as all stores are visible from this atrium.
Stores currently within the centre include Calvin Klein underwear, Fifi & Ally, French Connection, Lacoste, Oasis, Reiss, Ted Baker, Arran Aromatics, Jo Malone and Dwell. The centre is also well served by cafes, and restuarants, including Starbucks, Darcys, Barca, Zizzi and November, which also doubles as a nightclub. All in, there are around 45 retail units, cafes, and restuarants.
Vivienne Westwood has also just opened her first Scottish store in the Princes Square.
The basement area has a performance space that is widely used for concerts at Christmas time, and the wonderful accoustics of this building make the music travel right up to the roof without being too loaud.
Despite being one of the smallest shopping centres in Glasgow, it is probably the best designed, mixing retail with food and drink, giving plenty of space for general people watching. Even at busy times, this centre feels relaxed and spacious.
